The only thing to watch out for with those cashbacks, is that they are vouchers for the same stores. And... they're cashback vouchers for January... Good for if you live there, not good for if you're on holiday.

One other thing to note though is that if you see something advertised online or in print for cheaper than at another big box store, you can take that to them and ask them to match or better the deal.

Too true, I saw a camera there recently I wanted and when I was at a competing store I told them it was $xxx cheaper at another store, in two minutes he logged onto the internet, and beat the price. These stores trade, they dont umm and aah, they want your business and will do anything to get it.

I saw it, $399.00 I think.? Although now I recon you will get a discount at the stores, Best Buy, Sears, all of them will be selling cheap.

Best Buy has them for the same price. I've checked and they seem to be the best option.

If the airline allows it - buy an extra bag allowance. We did it last yre on Virgin for about R450, but do it online before you fly. Take a LARGE soft tog bag over in your case, unless you just buy one there. Also go to a local travel shop (here in SA) and buy locks that US customs can open to check your bags. Otherwise they will just break your suitcase locks to get access and it's not covered by the airline or US Customs.

Do try some of the local beers (small micro breweries!!)

they are great...

Aaah, dont get me started on the microbreweries - "Dog fish pale ale"...........I'll fly to the US just for that.

Yeah, you get TSA approved locks everywhere now, but they will only open the bags if there's something they see in the X-rays that needs to be checked, I have never had any bag opened, but I agree, better safe than sorry.

hubbers - i am going to the USA for a few weeks holiday - what should i be putting on my shopping list? Upgrades and cool kit for the bike (Specialized Epic 29er) are obvious priority and then electronics for the lounge, then cool stuff for the kids and then the odd thing for the Mrs?

Ideas pleas gents.....

What i found on my trip to California 2 years ago is that you should not expect to pay any less than here. Matter of fact, i found stuff like cycling shoes and kit more expensive there

laugh.png - Ha, Ha, they may even give you one.!

Cycling stuff doesn't interest me so I dont know prices in the USA versus here, but cycling as we know it in SA is very small in the US, commuting is fairly sizable and many shops cater to that market, but the racing culture is minute and very few shops specialize in that market, you would have to do some serious googling to see shops in your area that would have products you are looking for, shops for the commuting market and major sport retailers like Sports Authority carry the basics, but high quality shoes, helmet's etc are not really popular in the mass market.

It varies from state to state, but there is one specialized store is California that allegedly sells more bikes than SPecialized sells in SA in total. Very specialized (excuse the pun) scene in the USA. Road bike stores do only road etc.

I suppose it all rEally depends on R$ exch rate at the time and currently

I have saved 30 to 40 percent on things Often, like clothes, lights, derailleurs. I often take a bike bag with and then bring a bike back in the bag. Shop online for the specials and get it all delieverd .

Yeah, most likely. As I said I dont shop much for bicycling stuff, so I dont go look. I may pop into the odd store if I see it, but generally its not interesting to me.

The other advantage of course is that if you buy out of state and have it delivered you can sometimes avoid the local sales tax in that state, which in a state like California is substantial, New York as well actually. Again I think its a state to state thing, some will some wont.

Some are great, some are not - don't try anything that is supposedly beer and is remotely berry flavoured..... unless it's free....

Don't lambast the lambics! They're my favorite!

But Leinenkugel isn't considered a microbrewery.
