I took this pic on 2012-12-17 at about 06:30 at the corners of Roger Dysan and Voortrekker roads (the Exxaro corner).

Could this be a contributing factor for the number of road deaths?

Yes it was the authorities fault for not providing a police escort with "wide load ahead"

Riding against the flow of traffic is a kamikaze tactic of note! The reaction time of yourself and the oncoming car is almost nothing, you are traveling at speed in opposite directions and if you make contact it's a head on collision, the most serious type of collision! Cornering and blind rises make it almost impossible to pull off safely. If you want to see approaching traffic when you're out exercising then rather take up running. Runners move a lot slower.

There's only one answer to this: think what's best.

Two examples. I was riding the Wellington-Riebeek Kasteel road one weekend by myself, and felt uncomfortable at how close trucks were passing, the crosswinds, and the speeds cars were doing. So I rode on the wrong side of the road: I could see what the fools were doing and take evasive action if necessary.

I also watch the light around dawn or dusk. Part of the road on the way home is straight into the sun, and I know how little I can see when I'm in my own car. I ride on the opposite side because oncoming cars will see me, while I won't be run over by a blinded driver.

I agree that generally riding against the flow of traffic in urban areas does make life difficult for everyone. Just think what's best.

Do you take pictures of every traffic transgression you see?

What would you have done if it was just a SLOW driver? Or like you said a wide load without out escort?

I often get stuck behind a truck on my way home and just have to drive at 30 because that is the max speed the truck can do on that hill.

Get over it and see where the real problem lies.....if the authorities were doing their job these guys would feel that there is a reason to adhere to the rules.....right now I bet you they feel that "well Everyone else breaks the rules so why must we listen"

This country has got to a point where where I see people in traffic doing the same as taxis, pushing in, going down the left etc. Why? Because the taxis are getting away with it, so other people are now doing the same......the problem is that their is no ACCOUNTABILITY !

Easy solution for the N2.....call the toll free number and report their asses. I have no issue with a few cyclists getting fined, I have an issue when they come home in the newsthumbdown.gif

Perhaps those amongst us that are responsible should get a petition out to the authorities encouraging them to nail cyclists that ignore traffic rules.

This morning on my ride there was a dude with a Prado on a stretch of road in town with no shoulder. I only realized about 50m down the road that he was traveling at 25 km/h behind me, and as I looked for a place to let him pass he got a gap and safely passed me. Only then did I realize that he had a trailer for two jetski's which was about 1m wider than his car......THANKS MATE!!!! clap.gif

I am so glad i dont stay in the city.. I can feel the people's frustration and Anger..eek.gif .

You are so right

When I started cycling the group gave you some very nasty stick if you ventured over the yellow line. I still hate cycling next to someone, even if it is in the yellow line as it limits my bail options.

The only thing that scares us here on the "Platteland" are the Black Mamba's and the Pofadders in the road we get almost everyday.
