my mate has one, pros: lighter, better stronger chain, no chain suck.

you spin out on the flats. on uphills you still have a granny gear so ok there. depends what you want it for and how strong you are.

Its amazing the gearing choice that XX1 gives you. If you take a 3x10 Shimano setup with 24 - 32 - 42 in front and 11 - 36 at the back.

The gear ratio for granny (24 in front and 36 at the back) is 1.52.

The ratio for big ring (42 in front and 11 at the back) is 8.72.

An XX1 setup is 1.71 in granny and 7.31 in big ring.

This is like losing one gear either side of your 30 speed setup because one down from a 3 x 10 granny is 1.71 (almost exactly what XX1 is) and 7.38 is one down from big ring in 3 x 10 (almost exactly what XX1 is).

reality is "horse for course". If you are planning XC racing on reasonable level ground XX1 is king, however if you are touring with kit for 3 days the old 3 x9 or 3 x10 set up with a large cluster range is recommended. The more varied the terrian the more gears you need. I cannot see anyone except the pro's using a XX1 on the Sabie experience.

It may be cost effective to bring back the old 2x5 combination with a mother of all chains?

Eldron's opinions*:

*I have never ridden it.

Agree with Witkop - great for XCO and flattish XCM but woefully short of the right gears for XCM in Sabie/Clarens etc or "real" stage racing. Even 2x10 is too little.

Whilst a 10-42 cassette does provide a wide range it doesn't provide enough in between (big jumps between gears). That might just be me though - I use 11-32 on my 3x10 as I feel 11-34/36 has too big a jump between teeth.

Aesthecially - I just cannot accept a 42 tooth cassette - it looks stupid.

Basically it limits your choice of gears for very little advantage. The weight saving is great but will easily be outdone by climbing one long climb at too low RPM (this will destroy your legs) - chain suck? I haven't had any with my XT level 3x10. Hell I didn't have any issues with my old 3x9.

I'm a SS or 30 gear kinda guy - in between is just silly ;-)
