Stupid is as stupid does - I'm building a 1x11 internally geared bike :-)

Hi Eldron

Are you doing a Rohloff internal geared hub thinngy-majiggy?

Do yo have any info or experience on the reliability and mainenance of these things?

They're Schwalbe First Ride's wink.png

HAHA - was wondering if it was that obvious! eek.gif or if it was some tech term like EVO etc etc...

Never seen them before.

Aah... incorrect.

They are tyres from their prototype program... First Ride Development Program where facotry riders try out newly developed products...

I have been playing around with a few options

1x1 has been great...tough but good fun and adds some extension to the training.

The 11-36, 10 speed cassette is great for 90% of the applications, especially when paired with a 32/34 front ring. You cant climb super steep, or ride the flats super fast.

The 2 x10, has been a good general setup with enough top end gearing when added to a 29er in 26/39 front ring orientation. It covers you for 98% of the situations you find yourself in on a bike, for gearing requirements.

I am very keen to move to 1 x 11, chucking a shifter and a cable and a derailure away sounds like great news. Just cost is a major demotivator at the moment.

Different strokes for different folks I guess, I recently changed from a 3 x 9 setup to a 2 x 10 and loving the 2 x 10.Gives me everything the 3 x 9 did and some more.

What? It gives you 7 gears less and thats more?

Not looking to be an ass here but what are the advantages in your opinion?

I agree with it giving you everything the 3x9 did, but how does it give you more?

I'd love a Roelhoff but they're MEGA$$$$$.

I'm gonna try the Shiano Alfine 11 first and if I like it I'll eventually drop the dosh on the Rohloff.

No experience but the new Alfine stuff runs in a bath of oil (like the Rohloff) and maintenance is: emptry oil, rinse, fill oil. My kinda servicing!

No more cross-chaining or noisy gears. Although you loose a couple of gears, I find the ratios I have with the 2 by 10 is more than enough.

Hey, how can 20 gears give you more than 30 gears?

Firstly 3 x 9 = 27 ,so that's 7 more gears.On my 3 x 9 setup there were at least 7 gear ratios I never ever used.Like I said if it works for you then don't change it.I will stick with my 2 x 10.

xx1 is the way to go in my opinion! There are 32, 34, 36 and 38 blades. So you have a choice of gears. When 2x10 was launched most people also wondered if you would have enough gears.

If I am not mistaken Max Knox rode SA marathan champs on them and still rides it!

Buy the way if your moaning about the price... Works out about a R1 500 more than X0 2x10.

Replacing the cassette may be a bit hard on the wallet.

All I got to say... It is a personal choice what you want.

I can see bling bling bling. And I see:

  1. The cassette /freewheel combo's only to fit on certain hubs
  2. EXPENSIVE
  3. Expensive to replace cassette.
  4. You end up loosing the top end and/or the bottom end of your gearing.

In short, it looks good. But the practicality of the cassette/freewheel is not to my taste.
