Wishing Malcolm a full and speedy recovery. Not nice.

From the Sani Facebook page ...

Malcolm Estment, one of our riders, fractured a vertebra in his neck during a bad fall in the race and is currently recovering in Entebeni Hospital. His family is in Cape Town, so it would be great if riders in the area went to visit him. Farmer Glen, Mandy and Judy have popped in and he's very positive about his recovery. At the moment he has feeling in his arms but not in his hands. Doctors will decide in the next week whether they need to operate.

Visiting hours are from 3pm to 4pm and 7pm to 8pm. You can find Malcolm on the 5th floor (neurological ward). Please keep him in your prayers for a speedy recovery.

And a post from his son: The accident occurred on the 3rd and last day of the Trail race on the last floating bridge only a few hundred meters from the finish line. I don't want to give exact details of how the accident took place to avoid misrepresentation of events that I was not there to witness. As soon as he is able, I will ask Dad if he would like to comment on the fall itself. His biking partner and best friend John Tennant was there to assist where he could and I believe that the life guards in the water and the GP onsite, nurse and paramedics all did a sterling job. John stayed at Dad's side, missing his return flight to Cape Town on the Thursday evening to wait for Arlene and I to get to Durban that evening. John, your support is more appreciated than you know.

All jokes aside

This can actually end in some serious hurt, head first, clipped in, into the sand (at the beginning when still shallow)...

Still classic though, hope she gets a copy of it, it's def a mantel piece photo.

Many years ago a cousin of mine did the same (head first into sand, shallow water/waves) coming off one of those round beach sliding disks.

6 rides of about 40k from 24th March till the start.

44 overall, 16th in age...... note to self - don't ride with the flu again till completely recovered.

OK - there was some training done before 24 March... just a bit :)

I'm being more serious here, need to show my wife what to expect.

Partner and I had a decent base - but even without it I think we would have been OK. We started about 10 weeks out - aimed for around 8 hours riding per week. I think we only exceeded that once and in general averaged about 7 hours per week.

The weekly breakdown was generally 3 rides: 2 x 1.5 hour high effort rides in the evenings and then a 4 hour weekend ride at cruising pace (tried to include a fair bit of climbing during the weekend rides)..

We had no issues come race days. Finished up around the 16 hour mark.

I had not base to start from, partner and I did ONE long ride (over 40km)....be did Breeds and Little breeds (+-95km) in one go 12 days before the Trail started. Other 'training' included about 3 rides a week on ave 22km a ride.

We finished in 20h39min........that incl him riding with flats 2/3 days, him having tummy problems 2/3 days (no energy due to no food, etc), me flats 1 day, us on 'bigger' bikes (that does not incl 29"), stopping at each water point for at least 15min each.

It is seriously do able for anyone - I think most important for you and your wife must not get impatient with eachother and keep on doing it with the fun factor in mind, not racing. Luckily for us we ended up being a good team (even if we didnt do many rides together and knowing eachother for a short while).

I think each person should also bring his/her side and if you at a certain time feel you have more energy than the other, then assist with something extra, even if it is just fetching something at night or maybe doing his/her bike wash or filling hydration packs (admin related stuff).

I saw a lot of couples (like husband and wife) loose it with eachother along the trails, I think that drains energy quicker.

ok - 1600km with about 35000m ascent over 90 odd hours.....starting from a reasonable base (sani2c and berg and bush last year)

we came in at 15h 19min for the race....position 390 something
