Yup, it is. Not sure what happened to that athlete, but should have been disqualified

in certain circumstances the race organisers will give permission for an athlete to use a snorkel.

Last year I ran with a guy in a neck brace - he had had a big crash in training and only had up/down movement in his neck, no side to side movement. The doctors had ok'd him to race provided he could use a snorkel.

If I remember correctly he could qualify as a finisher but could not get a qualifying slot (not that he was going for one)

I am worried that athletes may get injured on this course. For some the surface is fine, not for me. I will not enter unless they change it back - simple as that. For those who enjoyed it, enter again and have a blast.

Cycling is not my strongest discipline at all and I k..ked off big time on the bike (7:30). Believe me, here in the NC we do not have hills that even come close to what we experienced on race day. Wait, we don't have any hills. But for some reason I would not want them to change the course back to the old one. I want to have a go at this new course again to see if I can get the better of it. Yes I agree, some of the road surfaces were not great and must be looked at for future events. I never felt that it was dangerous however. A few down hills and tight turns here and there, but nothing to complain about I feel. I think what helped, as someone else also pointed out, was that I drove the course on Friday to get an idea of what was waiting for me.

For now: New course: 1 ADe: 0

Maybe i have been a bit hard (excuse the pun) on the route.

Maybe they felt with the entry fee being so high they needed to give us more value for money.... enter IM and free of charge you also get to ride the paris roubaix cycle route!!

Haha Garf,

Surfaces must be good up in Bloem! The roads were much like the roads around the Cape

Time to weigh in on this year's race.

Swim was a PB at 1:22 despite only doing about 20km training since 70.3 (thank you muscle memory!) Cycle was tough but came in a respectable 6:21. I have never done so much riding at 10km/h up those hills into the wind. Towards the end of the bike, my body stopped digesting my food and things started to unwind.

I ran the first two kms at comfortably better than 6 min/km thinking that my efforts in run training had paid off. At the first water point, my stomach began cramping and so the walk began. 6h54m later I crossed the line having endured a very mentally tough afternoon. Although occassionally I flirted with the idea of quitting, I never really took it seriously. The spectators unending enthusiasm kept the negative thoughts at bay and dulled the pain. A couple of times I tried running but sensibility made me walk again pretty quickly. I never stopped except for hugs and encouragement from my wife and an extended puke stop behind the university.

I kept thinking about my mate Kevin Garwood who missed the bike cutoff by minutes and how Nikki would have done anything to do the run and finish. And all the others who would have loved to have been on the run. If I was able, I would keep going.

At the finish the crowd was incredible, somehow the misery dissipated and I crossed the line with a smile on my face. Broken but with a deep satisfaction of having completed the course. Final time, a rather humbling 14:58.

The race was brilliantly organised as usual. The one lap swim seemed OK, easier than I expected. The bike course has made this race a greater challenge. The views on the new section were simply phenomenal. It won't be so windy every year, but this was a bad one.

The road surface can be dealt with effectively with understanding of tyre options. I got this right and was way more comfortable than in previous years. There were some dangerous bits but good warning signage will mitigate this risk making it just fast and fun.

After 4 years of IMSA, perhaps I have become hypercritical of certain things, but the race is a spectacular event. I did expect more of the 10 year anniversary but other than a 10 year logo on everything and a special presentation to the Tenners at the Awards, not sure if anything was materially different.

My pet peeve of the Finishers Shirt was aggravated again. A cotton shirt so thin that my nipples and chest hair are clearly visible. Not appropriate for polite company. The word Ironman was not on the shirt, neither was the word Finisher or the date or the distances. Just the 10 year logo and the Merrell logo. At the awards ceremony there were more people wearing the 2013 shirt (which was great) than the 2014. It will make a nice soft cotton pyjama top.

It was interesting that when Paul Kaye in his usual cheerful manner asked who would be back next year, the response was very muted. I will be surprised if it sells out which may mean reverting to the old course.

Will I be back? It is going to take a long time for me to forget the pain but...and it is a big one...

The legend Ken Poole who dominates the 70-74 age group beat me in my first race in 2010 and again this year. That makes it 2-2. It's gotta be Best of Five!

Anyone keen on a couple of laps of the Cradle this weekend?

I have just invested in a Tandem and will be hitting the Cradle for a wobbly few kays in a new world with my wife on the weekend.

What is everyone take on recovery?

I went for my first bit of exercise after IM this morning, a leisurely cycle with mates on their morning ride. Legs felt good but any sort of acceleration made them felt heavy and tight.

After this morning, I don't think I'll be running for at least another week.

Oh that 3rd discipline is a non event for me and wont be back in the pool until at least July when training for 5150 starts again.

I am taking longer than I originally thought to come right, I took last week off, but did a 2 hour hard trail run on Sunday, that left me feeling shattered and with very sore legs. Swam on Tuesday for about 2km, which was pretty easy. Going for a massage today followed by a hours easy ride this evening, then an easy run tomorrow and longer ride on Friday. Going to keep the volume down next week but do some speed and power work in preparation for ITU on Saterday

Gees do you really think you need to do more training? Surely after all the training for IM and IM your body should be well trained! Sounds like you should be resting and not training. Better to go into ITU rested than tired
