Take it you haven't entered then?

Pity the guys at Comrades who can take 10 minutes to cross the start line and can't really run for 10km. And those are the guys trying to finish inside the cutoff.

I have and was one of the early entries before the mad rush.

I think they might just open entries for another 500 or so? surely an extra 200 people does not justify all these changes?

JUST STOKED THAT IM ENTERED FOR MY 1st :)

The entries have been set at 2000 for some time and this is the first time they have sold out. They have not increased the number of entries available so once again I asked how it changing the course for safety being greedy?

If they allowed 500 more entries then you would have a case but now they are trying to avoid bottle necks/drafting ... these are two separate things

Sheebeen - is that you?

nope, I'm here on the sidelines watching people make mountains out of molehills.

If it gets to 14% it can only be for 2 seconds - the climbs are really not that bad!

Jeepers. The amount of moaning going on here wrt the extra climbing is amazing. Sheesh guys, aren't you supposed to be Ironmen? :whistling:

Seems people who speculated they were making the changes to the course just to bump the number of available entries were right after all...

Email just received from the organisers:

With excitement running high for the 10th anniversary of IRONMAN South Africa, the race has sold out for the first time meaning many athletes were not able to get in and are now on the waiting list. We now have the chance to give some of these athletes the opportunity to be part of the only IRONMAN on the African continent.

Due to the widespread plea from athletes dearly wanting to be part of the experience, this is a carefully considered step in an effort to allow as many athletes as possible to experience what it is like to race at an IRONMAN.

After implementing the recent changes to the IRONMAN South Africa course, we commissioned a German statistician to run a statistical analysis on the capacity of the course. The analysis shows that with these changes we are now able to safely accommodate increased numbers on the course without compromising on safety and fairness.

It is important to note that we are NOT reopening entries but will instead be accommodating athletes who are currently on the waiting list up to a maximum of 2500 athletes in total.

IRONMAN South Africa has taken place over the last nine years and a big part of the success of the race is owed to those athletes who have been loyal to the brand by being regular participants year after year. To show our appreciation to our loyal athletes we will be offering the first slots to those athletes on the waiting list who have competed in five or more races. Please note that this applies only to those athletes who are already on the waiting list. Thereafter slots will roll down to athletes on the waiting list in chronological order.

The waiting list procedure will remain the same as athletes will receive an email notifying them that a slot has opened and they will have 48 hours to register and make payment to secure the slot. If the full registration and payment process is not completed within 48 hours the slot will roll down to the next person on the waiting list.

With IRONMAN South Africa being the only IRONMAN in Africa, the only option for athletes who cannot race here is to race overseas – something that is not possible for many South African athletes. We have listened to those athletes who want to do the race and feel that it is our duty as race organisers to give athletes the opportunity up to the point where we can safely accommodate those athletes without impacting on race quality.

We look forward to a truly special race for the 10th anniversary of IRONMAN South Africa with a new course and record numbers made up of race stalwarts and first timers alike.

there is so much complaining about numbers and climbing etc - everyone should just accept the challenge and enjoy it - I am SUPER excited - I don't care how much climbing there is, it will be tougher, but it will be tougher for everyone...

Money money money.

The inconvenience of changing the route is nothing compared to the extra R2,250,000 they going to make.

Cant say I blame them though. I would do the same. They just look a bit foolish now after pitching the whole "its for your safety story and a free and fair race".

Marketing is a powerful tool.

Why is it such an issue that the numbers are going up? Are we against capitalism? Don't we want to share this incredible event with other people?

Should we tell the sponsors to go away so that the organisers make less money?

Profitable races mean they can make them better so they attract more entrants so they become more profitable. It is a beneficial circle. Maybe even make more races. Make them unprofitable, the standards drop, the entrants drop, vicious circle.

None of you go to work for free. You all want to be paid well for doing a good job.

Stop whining and get training. You got some hills to climb, soldier!
