I am 95kg in my birthday suit , ride hard and am not particularly dainty about line choice. Have been riding 26" Schwalbe NN/RR snakeskin "combos for the last 3 years and have had very few issues.I am riding reasonably light wheels, Mavic crossmax St`s and am happy to sacrifice a little strength for the feel and responsiveness of a lighter tyre, just adjust your pressure according to the terrain and run with sealant.

jip - in the cape, doing mostly bottelary hills, jonkershoek - at this moment.

i dont think ill mind the extra weight - its not like im a contender to win any races (yet).

i want something that will keep the punctures away, and that will last long.

my wife doesnt understand why the mtb tyres cost so much - and to be honest i have difficulty explaining it to her as i also dont know.

There is not a lot of UST options available when we talk 29er ... of course we are talking 29er.

The UST version is just way stronger with a much thicker sidewall.

Maxxis Crosmark and Ardent = UST

Ikon is Tubeless Ready.

Reviving this thread for a stoopid question. Many comments here that the Ardent is a UST tyre. When looking at the Maxxis website (which is veeeeeerery slow), they have TR, no tubeless comments and UST/LUST options available in the 29er version. What am i missing in this whole tubeless set of options.

Sorry i cant paste an image but my PC settings do not like the hub.....

Sjoe, going back to 2013!

A lot has changed since then and options are now a plenty.

Maxxis added and changed some terminology:

The TR is Tubeless Ready

EXO offers stronger sidewalls, basically

LUST = still UST

So you can get the Ardent in Tubeless Ready

or Tubeless Ready with EXO

or UST

(ok, stronger, strongest)

Hope that helps

Thanks

Ordered (new tyres) with the EXO option based on the details provided, based on the photo, it does not have a UST or TR logo on the tyre. I asked the seller if the were suitable for tubeless and he said yes. I am just wondering if i bought a tyre that will leak air during a ride. They are for sani2c so i kinda need something that does not leak..... :whistling:

UST i understand is a design with a fancy lip seal system etc. Tubeless ready, i understand as being semi permeable, and a sealant like Stans etc is required. They also have a standard bead arrangement as opposed to some fancy sealing design like UST/LUST.

UST = Universal System for Tubeless, A Michelin, Hutchinson, Mavic co-owned license that specifies a tyre and rim design that does not require sealant to remain airtight, and provides specified dimentions for the bead shape, length for both tyre and rim.

TR(tubeless ready) are generic terms used by the rest of the industry to describe a tyre as being capable of being used as a tubeless tyre with sealant.

Lightweight Ultimate Sidewall Technology (LUST) (maxxis trademark and licensed UST design),

When tubeless first started out but in 1999/2000, UST was useless to identify which rim was compatible with UST tyres as the rim bead was designed to interface correctly, seal and retain a tubeless tyre with a bead that conformed to the specifications for UST.

Mavic, Hutchinson and Michelin still use the UST  system. Other companies have either made subtle changes to get around paying for the license or have designed rimes that work with bigger variety of bead designs e.g. Notubes Bead Socket technology.

The workd has moved on since then and UST tyres will pretty much hold onto any tubeless rim and UST rims  will seat any non UST tyre (if appropriately fitted and sealed with sealant.

The UST system (Rim+ Tyre) doesn't need sealant to keep the tyre and rim airtight

UST and TR tyres all have the same "fancy lip seal system". It's only the rest of the carcass that is different, TR being quite porous ready.

UST is typically heavier than TR because the carcass has  denser construction to make it airtight.
