after experiencing a blowout (tire blew of the rim) with a tubeless ready tire i was wondering if the weight saving of tubeless ready tires vs UST tires is really worth the risk eg, burps, sidewall cuts, blowouts etc

What rims do you have? This makes more of a difference than the tyres.....TLR tyres work better on dedicated tubeless or UST rims than UST tyres on non-tubeless rims....

I ride a TLR in the front and UST at the back, for no particular reason other that availability. Not sure if i'll buy a new UST once the back one goes. As someone mentioned, maybe it's the rim?

rims are tubless specific

I use both depending on terrain and bike.

Rocks bite through kevlar beaded tyres sidewalls. so on the FR bike definitely UST.

On the XC bike ill run what ever the trails needs. Some tyres arnt always available in UST so the standard folding is fine.

But then bearing in mind Im 65kg and and dont even get pinch flat when riding with tubes. Think it may be down to line choice.

i totally agree with what you say about line choice Ridin dirty. If i am riding with TLR tires i tend to pay attention to missing sharp rocks etc i have only ever had one sidewall cut and that was due to a beer bottle neck, but after having the blowout i have lost a bit of confidence in TLR. It may be that it was a dud tire but i'm just imagining how it would have ended if it was the front tire that let go

There is not a lot of UST options available when we talk 29er ... of course we are talking 29er.

The UST version is just way stronger with a much thicker sidewall.

Maxxis Crosmark and Ardent = UST

Ikon is Tubeless Ready.

Continental does not do a UST 29er, only the Protection

As does Schwalbe only Tubeless Ready with the Snakeskin - (great tires but they wear pretty fast)

The normal TLR Schwalbe tires have a very flimsy sidewall ... although I have given it plenty of punishment around the likes of Kliprug and Contermanskloof without any issues. Just keep the pressure above 2bar and you should be ok.

Light or Strong, pick one!

Strong = I would go for Maxxis, those are very tough tires, a bit heavy but tough and will last forever

Light = Maxxis Ikon or Schwalbe TLR

Light and Strong = (best all rounder) Schwalbe Snakeskin

great response Tankman! thanks for your input!

i had Crossmarks UST tires on, but they are damn heavy.. think they 840g

i put a set of Ritchey WCS shield on but had a blowout with them so i have kinda lost confidence in them

put a set of Racing Ralphs TLR on i think they weigh 535g so they weight saving is huge but the snake skin option is only 100g heavier so as you said i think the snakeskin option makes the most sense

Where does continental fit into here or have you not tested them?

I have had two Continental X-King Protection in the front now for the last 6 odd months - really awesome tyre in terms of proper grip and relatively low rolling restitance, but they leak air through the sidewalls. As far as my understaning goes, the Contis (not sure if this applies to all of them) are not available in tubeless.

On the rear I have had 4 Maxxis Ikons, properly light tyre, but VERY susceptable to sidewall cuts - so that is now a no-go for me. It runs great and has adequate grip, but on rocky terrain I couldn't trust it any longer.

I went all out with the new rear tyre and got the Specialized Fast Trak Grid UST - this tyre is full UST - you can tell by the weight, coming in at over 800g - however, this is almost 300g heavier than the Maxxis Ikon and have not been able to tell that for a moment since it has been on the bike. I rode the Magalies Monster over the weekend, managed to put a dent into a spoke, broke another and have got in the region of 30 fresh new marks and cuts on the rims and spokes - the tyre's sidewalls are full of scuffmarks, however it did not lose any air, did not get cut, nor left me in the trails with seperating rubber layers. I have now done Clarens marathon, Wellington marathon, proper riding on Table Mountain, road and district road riding as well as the Monster with it and cannot find fault with it. REALLY IMPRESSED.
