Hi guys

Well it started with the bearings on my front hub being stuffed. The price you pay when you weigh 100kgs and jump you bike with a rigid fork off every obsticle you can find. Yes like a small child.

(There was alot of lateral play in the wheel and the bearing were being to squeak and there was excess friction, especailly on the uphills.)

Anyway got quotes from two LBS (wont name them cause they are both actually great shops I get great service from them and the quotes are actually fair enough when you consider what genuine parts cost and their labour)

The quotes I got were:

LBS 1: R 380

LBS 2: R 400ish

Didnt wanna spend that much money on something I was sure I could do myself.

So I stripped the hubpost-16067-0-17869700-1370006464_thumb.jpg

The bearings looked pretty standard so off to BMG.

So R70-00 and 20 mins later.

Now before I get scolded, I know that any warrenty is now void, and I have hugely devalued the wheels.I know that these bearings are probably not as good as the original DT Swiss one. But I have been through two rims on these wheels and they are already as far from original as possible.

I would love to have used my LBS but just didnt hav ethe extra cash at the time and thought what the hell let me try.

Ok bring on the uitkak :nuke:

Very interesting reading....

I was having the same problem last week. After the Sani i decided to strip both my bikes and clean them properly. Last week Friday afternoon i decided to assemble one for a ride on the Saturday morning. Big was my disappointment when i find that the front wheel bearing is is not turning. Since the Giant Trans was not going to be ride able, I decided to assemble the Giant Anthem for the ride. That also did not work as the back wheel bearing was making a noise.

Long story short i decided to strip both bikes hubs and was pleasantly surprised how easy it is to service the DT Swis hubs. Without having bearings (Friday afternoon) i open the side of the sealed bearing and washed them out properly with solvent, re-crease and fit them again. Work like a charm, but will get bearings from bearing man and replace them rather.

I will rather service my own hubs in the future.... :whistling:

Lekker! Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs are just as easy to do. Cost me R200 for rearhub(4x bearings) and BB to replace.

so Hopes are DIYable. Any special tool needed?

I was under the impression that the Pro 2 Evo's used proprietary bearings, while the Pro 2's used commercial over the counter bearings...

Got the Evo's and enduro's work perfectly.

You missed a bearing - there are 5 in that hub and freehub.... 1 of which is a non standard size.

Special tools are not really needed - but they do make it easier - and do less damage to bearings when removing them - especially if just stripping to clean and regrease.

I have a set of hope hub and bb tools - well worth having - but if someone needs help stripping a hope hub, pm me - happy to help or loan tools to use (but only in my own garage)

I am doing this overhaul on Mavic Cross Ride since 2009. No problem. Bearings are standard. 3 x bigger ones, and one smaller one at the free wheel hub. Forgot the exact dimensions, you can get it on Mavic's web site.

Watch out for excessive hammering. I use a piece of threaded rod as a bearing puller. This will pull the bearing parallel to the axial line. Also, hammering is avoided when when you pull in a new bearing on its outer racing [ring]. You will find that one of the sockets in a socket set has an outside diameter [OD] a little smaller than the bearing's OD.

If you find a job simple, then it is not neccessary to run to your LBS - do you take your bike to the LBS to pump the tyres?

I seem to be unable to get my freewheel body of my hope pro2s.. Anyone with advise as to how I can remove them?

WD40, but know that you will have to clean and regrease after. Spray WD40 on body and hub. let it soak in...wait for 5 min or so. And then just pull the freewheel body off
