I have some play on the axial of my XT pedals. Probably needs a service/bearing replacement. Been using it for about 3 years.

Has anybody done this before?

There is a video on You tube about this. I've done it with the entry level Shimanos and it was fairly easy.

If u google "service shimano pedals" u should find the clip.

You are at least three years ahead of the average Crank Brothers pedal owner...

:D They say that Crank Brothers pedals are for people that like servicing pedals more than riding them. ;)

Easy open the pedel, set the play, full the peddle with grease, insert shaft - all done!

is there nothing under the threaded part that is worn out and need replacing (touching the bearing)

So with a bit of logic, bit of google & me taking my XTR pedal apart last night, I've come to the conclusion there is nothing wrong with Shimano XT/XTR/M520 pedals, we the riders are the problems. Lets admit it how many of us actually take our pedals apart for a service? Very few to none, yes I'm guilty of not doing it & guilty for not requesting the bike shop do to it either.

So when you are doing rides in the rain or races that takes you through river crossings or just hosing the bike off with the garden hose or even high pressured cleaner, water gets into the pedals cavities & this causes the grease to eventually dry up & disintegrate. Then everyone is quick to say these pedals are *** but nobody took the time out to service it regularly, I'd say service i.e. Strip & re-grease at least every month during wet season & probably every 3rd month during the dry season.

So to answer the OP, it's very easy to service pedals even I did it.

Milky you made my day. My LBS spoke to Shimano and was told that a XTR service and replacing the worn bits, costs a R1k and I ended up buying XT replacements. Luckily I kept my XTR trail pedals. As soon as I have time I will be taking them apart.

how long did you ride before noticing the problem? If you rode for quite a while with it making that click noise & enduring the play in the pedal, chances are the runner, where the bearings are packed on grinded away & that's the part that needs replacing, bearings could've also lost its round shape (yep that's possible), so have a good look over there.
