TriRock Durban

TriRock Durban seems to be steaming ahead. As we lost the other thread, thought I would start a new one.

The new website is up with lots of detail including the Athletes' Guide. This clearly needs a lot of work but it is early days yet.

I was originally quite skeptical about this race taking place but have had some comms with Race Director Grant Kunneke over the past few weeks. My mind has changed and I am very excited about the event.

Grant has promised a letter from TSA to be posted shortly, endorsing the event and confirming that the race has met all the requirements including road closure approval.

The race looks like it is going to be really awesome.

With all the doubt from the previous thread, asked a few questions through people in DoT for KZN:

Unofficially they know of and have approved the road closures for the race, and the lady I spoke to who issues the permits says she cant see any reason for the permit to be cancelled.

Like I said, unofficial, but that's good enough for me

Guess what, I still haven't been reimbursed my Challenge Cape Town money from 2011 ... just putting it out there...

So technically you're one of the sponsors for the TriRock? Well done, its been tough lately with sponsors pulling out of events :whistling:

Editied to add that I am still on the fence for this event

I see tri-rock appear to be the organisors of an open water swim that is happening at Hillcrest wine farm on the 30th of June. Great that there is a new event but they're charging R100 to swim 1.6km...... and the dam is quite small so it'll have to be a few laps to map up that distance. Just seems expensive. And it's an extra R50 to listen to the live music afterwards........ seems pricey.

And if you want to enter as a relay for the triathlon it is an extra R1300 compared to the early bird, or R900 for the late entry. Seems a bit excessive when there is no difference between a relay entry and an individual entry as far as I can tell.

Was reading in the local paper that gets shoved into your post box once a week that the Ethekweni council has commenced road works on the M4 between Umhlanga and Umhloti.

R125m to be spent on upgrades and resurfacing over the next year.

Expect lane closure / stop-go / delays / traffic congestion etc etc

Woneder how that will affect the ride route of Tri Rock.

Guess i will wait until next year before entering this one

Sent a message to Grant Kunneke about the road works:

Hi Grant

Hope the preparations for September are going well. Really looking forward to the race.

I read today that there are planned roadworks beginning shortly on the M4 between Umhlanga and Umdloti which will include road closure. Will this affect the cycle route in any way?

Kind regards

Dave M

His reply:

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the email. Good to hear from you.

Yes prep is coming well, long hours but getting there!

I am awaiting formal response from ETA as they assured me it won't be effecting the race. Worked closely with them so would have been notified in our various meetings of any works which would prohibit the race happening. I know they are just starting with site setup and the majority of the work on the M41.

Will respond as soon ETA got back to me but all in hand.

Yours in Tri,

Grant
