I am putting together a list of riders to do the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve (15 min by car south-east of Alberton) on week days as well as weekends. There is no better place for hills and no safer place in South Africa to ride! Now that it is so cold in the mornings, riding middle of the day make humane sense.

Will certainly look into doing this 2 X 17km laps with good climbs could be a good training ride.

The purpose of my posting was to find riding partner(s) for the very hilly 58km tar road loop - either with mtb or road bike, but all on tar.

Hi there, for those interested, there is MTB trails in the reserve as well as hiking trails and they range all the way up to 70kms, i have seen people riding on the trails whilst training on the tar track.

 

Henley 1, I would love to join you on the route but will only be strong enough in the next 2 months or so. I was in a pretty bad vehicle accident in March where I crushed my hip and have only just started riding short distances in the last 2 weeks and doubt whether I will have the strength to make it up the first hill. I will however PM you when i am ready to ride as I plan on training for the 94.7 (as I did for the Argus) and there is no better place. There is normally 5 of us that train there but my group are too lazy to do it without my influence.

Anyone have info on the hiking trails? Last I heard the huts were closed and routes in a terrible state.

Hey, what sort of gearing on a road bike would the mid pack rider need for SBR.

 

I have a compact 50/34 with a 11/25 at the back. I suspect that this should be enough. Would hate to run out of legs halfway through the loop.
