Road Wheel Hubs: Novatec or Powerway ?

Building 50mm Carbon tubbies for a 65 kg rider - decent climber, but perhaps a better flat time trial type rider with a good sprint (track background).

Can choose between Novatec A271SB/F372SB hubs, weighing 405g or lighter Powerway Alloy Super Light hubs, weighing 285g. The lighter Powerway Hubs will cost me about R 400 more.

Main concern is quality - have had Novatec before and am quite happy with it, but do not know much about the Powerway brand ?

Keen to hear about experiences from other hubbers.

When deciding on a hub, as the supplier of there are local spares available. Ignore bearings, they're standard, but ask if the supplier has pawls, pawl springs and freehub bodies in stock. Ask how much for each of those items. If they hesitate or say that they never break or that they will soon get stock, stay away. A broken 10 cent spring in a freehub body that can't be replaced is a very expensive throw-away - you chuck the entire wheel.

Subjective properties like fast-rolling and strong are meaningless when choosing a hub.

I know this thread is 2 years old but i'm in this boat now. The wheels i'm looking at come standard with powerway R13(280g). I have a choice to swop(I presume pay in a bit) out for novatek 271(382g) or 291(318g). The weight difference is so minimal i'm not really concerned. I just want a good quality hub.

I have Novatec on some road wheels for about one year now, haven't managed to wreck them yet. If you are prepared to wait for delivery and buy them on aliexpress.com or ebay they are really cheap.

I have Novatec on MTB rear hub, (looks similar to road hub), also haven't managed to wreck that one yet and I have tried.

I think hubber CCD sells the powerways - ping him - they look really good in the flesh.

Cool thanks

I have a set of powerway hubs, and they are really good. They are build on a set of 50mm carbon wheels with Sapon spokes. A lot of the guys that sells hubs on The hub, can get parts for you, but the hubs will last long if you keep an eye on them an serves them.

On the novatec hubs, they make some really good stuff, but they had some problems on some of there stuff, like freebodys that collapse in side the hub, and some of them were the bearings get loos in the hub body. "this was with  A271SB and the F372SB models"

Ok thanks. Interesting about the novatec, The 271 was actually one of my options I was looking at.

Novatec still top choice or would you guys consider Powerway rather?

Looking at getting a wheelset but want to make sure I pick the best value for money

Thanks

I have had my Novatec hubs now for 4 and a bit years, not one issue.

I ended up going with the novatec 291 and although I very seldom ride this bike(used for road races only when on the single bike) I am happy so far. Had them just over a year and only done 1000km odd so they still "new"

EDIT: 291 front and 482 rear. Can't remember all the other letters in the code.
