John - thanks. It's been a real struggle getting someone to actually come back to me on this. I appreciate your efforts. A simple "we can't cover that" would suffice. It would mean I take the cycle part of my cover to Cyclesure, who have confirmed in writing they will provide that level of cover for around the same premium - but at least the matter will be clear all around.

Cheers

Are you riding professionally? Just be careful if you are, as most domestic policies will exclude liabilities arising from your employment/business/profession...

No - just for fun

As always, I'm fascinated at conventional Hub wisdom - the OP is happy to phone call centers and get sage input from fellow Hubbers, which appears to trump a look at his policy docs.

Just a couple of points of correction - my original post wasn't to seek advice from Hubbers, just relay my experiences. The feedback is useful.

Second point is that I am no lawyer, and the policy wording is hard to follow in places - especially with contradictory information on the website. I know the website won't be taking in court, but it may lure others into the policy, hence my original warning post.

In the absence of clarity in the policy, I sought written confirmation from OUT - and that's where things really started to unravel.

A long way of saying in reply "I'm not an idiot, just someone who wants clear and simple insurance cover"

I have two bikes and all my kit (specified) valued over R50 000.00 insured at OS for R325.00 pm. Had one claim a few years ago (a couple of months after insuring bike with OS) and it was paid out within 3 days, no questions asked. I actually thought that they would just replace the cracked frame, but they paid out the full insured amount.

Had to phone them a few times to enquire about when they are going to collect the old bike. After a while I got told to keep it and dispose of it as I feel fit.

Will get my OS bonus back within the next month or so.

walker, good luck with the ride. look forward to lots of pics and a great ride report

Haha - thanks. This week is last full week of training, then I'm in taper mode. Can't believe it's come around so quick - nervous does not begin to sum up how I'm feeling. Will try and snap as many pics as time allows, and post some war stories after!

What I CAN add to this thread, is that apparently OS used to have decent premiums for bicycles a few years back. I only got my outrageous quote this year around March. I then phoned one of the managers which I happen to know and he told me that unfortunately due to the nature and amount of claims they received over the past few years they had to push the premium up.

So there definitely are the lucky ones with good service and premiums with OS ;) I just got told unfortunately that they cannot reduce the quote for my MTB of R895, which I think is waaaaay too much!

Just to post the "conclusion" to the original post. OUT client servics did indeed call me, as promised up-thread. They quickly got the clarification I needed too. It seems that despite being mentioned on the cycle insurance page, the liability cover does not actually include cycling - it's part of the contents policy. WIll mean I'm likely to need to switch to Cyclesure to get the cover I need, but fair play for OUT confirming it even in the face of losing the business. They also committed to clarifying the web page wording.

Not exactly the outcome I was hoping for, but it is a clear resolution and means I know what to do next.

Got bikejacked years ago, they paid out in full within the week...

But also haven't managed to get them to change my missus bike from a Gery Visser to a Gary Fisher in the last years

Hi there. Did they pay you out in full, or did the expect you to replace your bike through their preferred supplier?

Exactly the same with me. Was told my claim had been approved, and that their approved suppliers would be in touch with me. What happens if I dont want to replace my bike after having been bikejacked?

I'm on about my fifth call to try and get absolute clarification on what they cover.

But if you read their sales talk on their website everything looks great:

http://www.outsuranc...oducts/bicycle/

Especially these bits:

  • Receive complete protection from OUTsurance when you are racing, training or riding socially.
  • You'll also receive worldwide cover! There is literally no place on earth you can go where you won't be covered. So why wait? Next time you visit Mozambique, don't hesitate to take your bicycle with you.

And later on:

  • If you already have household insurance with OUTsurance, we'll throw in personal legal liability for up to R5 million.

I have had such a policy with them for a while, but am having enormous difficulty getting them to confirm that the policy covers what they claim above - specificlly the personal liability aspect. Despite advertising it, they don't seem to want to actually confirm it is covered.

I'm pretty close to switching to Hollard Cyclesure, who actually do seem willing to confirm they cover all of the above.

You can also try Miway.

I'm with them, but I still need to claim from them, so I can't tell how the service will be.

My road bike was detailed as a 'Giant VCR' for ages. Can only imagine how an assessor would have spent days at dion wired or hifi corp trying to find out what it was and what the replacement value was.
