I have been using Go Pro mounts for about 3 years now and have not had a failure on any occasion. Here is what I do:

prior to mounting the camera, I put insulation tape around my handle bar. This works well, especially when you have fancy carbon bars.

I mount the camera so that the casing and body hangs "down", rather than up. Note, you can flip the image under settings to enable you to record in this position and not having to flip the image later on. This means the camera is not top-heavy as is the case with the normal mounting method.

I never over tighten the mounts. Its plastic and plastic gets compromised under pressure. You then have to live with adjusting the camera from time to time, but with the wide angle it records at the margin for error here is a non-event for me.

Remember to have fun with your camera. If it frustrates you, sell it. There is no point in using a gadget if it only spoils your ride for you.

And when you have a race board?

What happens when you want to change it to helmet mount?

Have to take out multitool, strip screw, strip moer, shout, throw camera down, buy new Drift HD

You could use one of these

Or you could get

This weekend on day 2 of the Botswana Kalahari Challenge, the GoPro started to rattle & hit the mountings ... and I wasn't sure what the heck was going on ... until the GoPro went flying ... :cursing:

So it is a bit of a bumpy, uneven, rocky ride ... but really not that bad

So has this happened to you? And I'm really starting to get ticked of with GoPro - great product with useless accessories!

And it's just impossible to mount the damn thing in one position!

Hi Ysterman,

Contact the GoPro Team at gopro@omnico.co.za or on 021 3001526 and they'll sort you out.

MTB and Road cycling(due to vibration) is considered a high impact sport and the polycarbonate extensions can break in those situations. In fact if they didn’t it could cause injury. We can recommend using the Roll bar mount on the stem of the bike for beautiful clean and stable shots of your riding. It may also be a good idea to tether your camera in rough conditions.

Had the exact same failure on my GoPro mount on day 2 of the Sani this year. I assumed that the plastic just fatigued as my mount has not endured any major impacts.

Attached is a small video of the breakage. Kudos to the GoPro for still working faultlessly afterwards.

Mine broke in exactly the same spot going down Edinburgh drive on the argus - it bounced at 40km/h and broke open and all the pieces went flying. I picked up what i could and continued with the race. It was the third time i used the mount.

I contacted omnico and they told me to bring it in. Replaced the mount and gave me brand new camera seeing that mine had some tar marks on it with in 3 days. (tried to organize a buy-in for an upgrade but they didn't want to budge  )

I threw the new gopro mount in the cupboard and bought a K-edge and have been using it on all my MTB rides without issue. It also took some of the shaking out of the video as well, the k-edge is alot more stable thatn the gopro mount.

Some where someone mentioned that on the epic gopro themselves use k-edge mounts....dont know if its true though.

Not K-Edge but similar. Locally manufactured, cheaper and lighter than K-Edge. Will hit shelves soon......

The exact thing happened to me a while back using the roll bar mount.... The roll bar mount is not very practical on a bicycle.... It's way too big with bolt thread pointing in places that might hurt if falling.

If you going to use your gopro finger tight, you may as well put prestic on your phone and use it as a action camera.... I'd suggest using the the phillips screw driver or a spanner. The idea is to get it just just tight enough so it doesn't move. I doubt this is good for the plastic, but this thing is useless without this method...

If you are able to adjust your gopro with one hand while blazing down a single track, I'd suggest you sell your mtb and get yourself a road bike because this thing they call MTBING, YOU DOING IT WRONG!!!!

No, I'm definitely doing it right, that's why some of the video clips you have to tilt your head at an angle to watch it :)

Thanks, I lot of good advise - unfortunately don't have the time to respond to all. I will certainly investigate.

Seems there is an alternative for the mounts, but the biggest problem is the housing ... does someone have a 3rd party housing yet?

Are they the agents in SA? I got the GoPro as a present & have no idea where it was purchased, and I can find out - but the proof of purchase will not exist anymore ...
