It is the 325i motor that was stroked to 2.7l and used in the Shadowline BM's.Only produced about 126kw, it got's ass handed to it on many an occasion by the Opel Superboss with only a 2l 4 pot motor.

Yeah, but that Superboss was a coffin on wheels...

100% correct. Out the factory 2.7 used in the Evo2 etc.

100% got its ass handed to it by the superboss (and so did I many times in my mk1)

BUT!!

 

Nothing affordable sounds as good as the 2.5/2.7 straight six scream at full chat!!

gives me the grille just thining about it...

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking along the lines of the 4 potters and a potential turbo upgrade int eh future :devil:

 

Those sr20DET's are indeed potent. But a mate of mine has planted a nasty little seed in my head - s2000 motor. Pity they're upwards of 50k for an okay one...

 

 

Wanted to suggest that, but the cost of procuring a good one.....    (175kw out the box, all mortor!!)

 

Thing is, with the '7 being so light, you do not need a crap load of power to make it run good. No use in having a gazillion horses, and you can't use them.

Turbo'ing the Toyota motor is quite a mission to do it right. If done right, it does produce mega KW, and quite reliable so. But it's gonna cost you.

 

The SR20DET motor and box can be bought for around 15k, stock standard it will produce enough KW to use reliably on the track and for everyday use. I'll just use a decent (Halltech, etc) stand alone CPU in favour of the stock item. That will yield some really good results.

 

And you'll run rings around the Porkers........

Cap, a Frord V6 motor is not the wisest choice. It's a heavy, lazy motor. Will make the nose too heavy and prone to understeering, pushing the nose out in tight corners when the car is driven the way it's meant to be. The same with the 6pot Beemer motors.

Best to stick to the 4pots. And as you say, the 1.6 20v Toyota (spit spit...) motors is the most common choice.

Me, I'm a Nissan fan, therefore I'll cram an SR20DET motor in there. Bulletproof little motors, with the latest series "blacktop" motors developing in the region of 150 flywheel KW. More than enough for a brilliant little toy.

And it should show a clean pair of heels around a track to the Porker in the photo's above. :devil: :ph34r:

oh - on the understeering into a tree bit - if I go 6 pot up front, I'll definitely be putting some ballast in the back (in addition to my heft)

 

BUT - people have been known to put 8 potters in these things with some success. Must handle like a pig, but yeah.

 

Also - given that the bimmer 6 pot gives you approx. 125kw out the box, and a slightly tuned blacktop can give the same amount with a remap and some trick bits (and the SR20 can give a LOT more than that.. up to 200kw if you have enough tom) then it becomes more... responsible.. to go the 4pot route. Especially seeing as that won't need any more bracing in the chassis...

 

Which I'll be doing anyway, cos the weight penalty won't be that high in the grand scheme of things. I'm not going to race the thing, am I? :devil:

And the revs!!! Oh lordy, the REVS!!!

 

This is getting expensive. But yeah. Nissan is def a good option. 15k isn't bad, incl the box. Hmmmmm....

toyota is the most used engine for a reason, cheap reliable up to the task

It's also the motor used for the locost 7 racing series.

 

But... the SR20 would present a better option from which to build a good, solid, reliable car when the power goes north.

The 4AGE motor is great. Had an Oyster Grey Conquest RSi many years ago

yeah, it is.

 

This is like a return to my youff, when I had my mini. In many respects that was when my true petrolheadedness kicked in. Rebuilding motors, changing pistons, rods, rings etc as I wanted / needed more poooooweeeeer. Only thing I didn't do was rebuild gearboxes - that was beyond my ken.
