Fake / Counterfeit Bikes & Components: News and how to spot them

This opens a new can of worms. Selling the genuine article second hand if it is grey will lead to problems for the buyer should he/she ever require support.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the warranty fall away if you are not the original buyer anyway? Yet you should still be able to get support. Like getting a motor plan for a car, you can still go back to the manufactures if anything failed/ needs fixing and the car is out of warranty?

This seller is trying to sell a Chinese frame off as a Cervelo.

He also had a ad in classifieds for wheels

Cervelo advert

As i told you. I was even shown the un-rebranded s 5 frames. If it was chinese frames that he showed me I dont know tbh. I probably will never know. he even showed the 15% changes he made to the frame to make it legal. If that too was a scam, then he was very good.

I bought the bike 2 weeks before the 94.7 for R30k, then bought the extra set of wheel in feb. Now I am trying to sell it, and it appears I have been made a fool of. And after you and other hubbers advise I reduced the price of the wheels. What more do you want?

So I have learned my lessons, but surely gummi you can have some better that than just publicly flaming people without having all your facts straight.

See, the think is, rastaman, that that is a fake cervelo frame. Whoever sold you the wheels and frame, was lying. It's a branded Chinese frame.

The wheels are also Chinese imports. If you've read this thread, you'll be able to spot the differences.

We don't have a problem with the attempt to sell, but rather, we're not happy with the attempt to sell as a "rebranded" "cervelo" frame. Also "shimano" wheels.

Rather just advertise as Chinese frame, with a great spray job and awesome components, you'll need to adjust that price, but not by too much I suppose, and you should be okay.

Good luck dude. And please note, not knocking the bike. I rode next to you during the krugersdorp classic, and it's a beauty... But it is what it is.

This is the same bike you posted in every thread you could at the time wanting to boast about your pride and joy.

You even argued about the fact that it needed a respray if I recall.

My guess is that you knew exactly what you had from the word get go.

I still remember posting in one of those threads giving advise on customising his ride. ..

sorry didn' mean to brand the wheels as shimano(mean tit has the shimano hub or is shimano compatable) instead of campag. Its unbranded wheels with powerway hubs, not shimano wheels

to be honest not that you care but I didn't know any of it is chinese, not until I got flamed for posting.

i bragged about the bike because I was proud, I wouldn't have bragged if I knew it was chinese.

And if anyone of you have met me you would know I am not a thief.

I will edit the adds to state it is imported

** Edited ads, some mistakes are hard learned

RastaMan I can understand how this evolved. I can also understand how the guys selling branded bikes can feel agrieved by people buying equipment at "better " prices. They carry the burden of warranties etc. Problem is that you are the end of the scam. Do what KE didnt do - take the shots. Be honest in the adds and you should be fine. Good luck.

Interesting to note that most of the fake bike stuff is made from carbon.

I suspect that is because the fakers make or copy a mould, and then mass produce with the cheapest low grade carbon they can get. That and selling direct means they can still make a good profit. It looks as if they are not able to use the same business model with metal parts.

If the fakes are made with lower grade carbon, more would have to be used to give it the same strength, meaning the component would weigh more, or alternatively, if it has the same weight, it would be weaker.

An easy way to avoid fakes would be to buy metal stuff.

I read an article in a bike magazine once. The article said that some carbon frames have such thin walls that they wouldn't be able to support the weight of a person, so they reinforce the inside of the frame with fibre glass.

Obviously not all Chinese frames are this bad, but when you buy a fake from Alibaba, eBay or Cycle Science, you will never know if you are getting the quality one or the fibre glass one.
