My new smallholding is exactly 3km from schapenburg MTB trails. I just spent 2.5hrs riding 40km of single track and insane climbs, and the only tar I rode on was when i crossed the road when I left my place

I hate you

Careful riding Schapenburg on your own. There have been a few mugging and bike-jacking incidents in the last few months.

heh - interesting story that. So as far as I understand, there hasnt been anything for quite a while now. There was a problem with a certain individual from the village about a year ago. There were breakins etc. Then he would get caught, and all was quiet for a month or so. As soon as he got out, it started again.

Then he went and got himself killed in a gangfight. And since then, crime has dropped drastically. The one complex has reported they havent had a single breakin since he offed himself.

But yes, I'm always cautious

My dad is relocating to one of those new estates on Old Sir Lowry's Pass Rd later in the year. Even more reason to go visit then.

reckon I should just go and buy myself the year permit. closest peace of mountain to me.

for me its definitely worth it. If you're a PPA member its 20 bucks to ride there, and I think a year permit is R100. I've ridden there 3times this week, so I definitely get my moneys worth

Friend and myself had a scare there last year. He visited me whilst I was working there and wanted to show him the awesome trails. We however did get a bit lost especially with the trails they were busy setting out for the race passing through there (W2W I think). We did end up very close to the village and saw two very dodgy characters communicating with some hand gestures. I was however carrying a lot of speed at that stage and decided if they were to try anything I would use bodyweight and speed to my advantage

Think most of that trails are safe though. But I would rather turn back at the rail road and not venture so close to the village again.

Must add that the trails there are simply awesome! Rode there quite often and filled up water bottle at some of the upper mountain streams

lemme know next time you in the area and I'll gladly join you for a ride

Will do. If I can get off work I would like to do the Lourensford race end of September. Another awesome route that. Maybe stay a few more days and do the other routes as well.
