SA cycling records - the long distance category

By records, I mean both fastest time as well as the actual acknowledgment of the journey.

So this is for the audax crowd.

I was reading the book on cape long distance swimming and their records are meticulous..everyone who has done a swim of any significance is recorded - obviously robben island to various parts of the mainland is the most popular.

I'm guessing that the joburg to capetown trip is probably the most common 'long distance ride' that people would undertake. What sort of records are there of this? must have been first done over a hundred years ago.

There should be a defined 'route' for joburg to cape town, joburg to durban. beit bridge to CT etc. as for round south africa, i think it's fairly obvious with the coastal roads, but inland you can only get so close to the border and still ride in a straight line.

Was also interested in this, especially longest distant ridden in 12 and 24 hours. Googled it extensively, but couldn't find the records if they exist.

There are records kept for all Audax rides, for 200, 300, 400 and 600km rides. Will check on these and report back.

I am resurrecting this topic because Lachlan Morton was cycling around Australia.  The D'Ville Cycling Club's Audax group was talking about it and trying to find out what the record of cycling, say the length, breadth, and perhaps around South Africa is.

We could not find anything, so I'm wondering if anybody else has a link or contacts to find out what those records are. We have some real monsters in the Western Cape who like these ultra-distance rides.

I know the record for Durban CBD to Johannesburg CBD is under 3 hours on a motorbike. Christmas day 1988 by an absolute legend and yes that is over 190kmh

you obviously know a little more detail about this.

I'm curious as to the bike and what sort of distance between refueling.

sorry for the hijack

I have an old bike magazine with an article about it from back in the day, That is about it from what I recall. Suzuki GSXR with a few mods and guys waiting road side to refuel him along the way. Christmas day to avoid the traffic and police.
