Medically I dont understand what happened, I wonder if anyone would be able to explain in simple terms the medical issue as to why he would lose feeling below a certain point.

I ask as I had a lumbar fusion and although I never lost feeling I had tremendous pain and a huge loss of strength, would this be a similar issue just a lot more severe.?

not even close. Martyn had dislocation of vertebrae that probably resulted in direct damage to the spinal cord. The delayed loss of sensation is probably because of swelling inside or outside the spinal cord, but within the spinal canal which can also damage the spinal cord.

your lumbar fsion would result in similar swelling, but to a much lower degree resulting only in pain. Be glad u had pain, because he has none, and he'is in deep sh1te. Granted, it's early days. Swelling must still subside and hopefully he will regain sensation. I just hope there's no partial or full transection. For the latter, its simple: game over.
