Day 4: Anysberg to Gamka Dam. Windy and far. Got in the car on this stage to shorten it a bit. Will recommend extra night somewhere - e.g. Rouxpos

We were 4 people, 4 bikes and a bakkie. One person drove 95% of the route, but other people took the responsibility when he wanted to cycle.

I would recommend to split day 4 @ ~Rouxpos. Not a flat day... Do-able, but you would need to be fit when the wind pick up.

I would have preferred to be fitter - there is nice singletrack on day 1 around the golf course, on day 2 before Rooiberg kelder and in Anysberg itself that would have been nice if we had the legs/time. there is a single track gem between Robertson and Aston on the left hand side of the road.

Accommodation:

  • In Worcester we stayed with family.
  • In Montague we used a self catering house in the caravan park. (they have an indoor/warm swimming pool now, which was brilliant) Very good value for money. http://www.montagucaravanpark.co.za/1.home.html
  • In Anysberg we used one of the self catering houses of Cape Nature. There is camping facilities as well. This was the most expensive night, but the quality is a lot better than a couple of years back and the swimming pool deck view is brilliant. http://www.capenature.co.za/reserves.htm?reserve=Anysberg+Nature+Reserve
  • At Gamka dam we stayed in one of the self catering houses of Fox Ledeboer. (you need to stay with him otherwise he wont take you over the next morning) http://www.gamkapoortdam.co.za Make sure you are on time with him :whistling:
  • We stayed with family on a farm near Prins Albert

For the route, you should be able to connect the dots between these Strava recordings that one of the youngsters used. (there are gaps)

How much on dirt vs tar?

Day 1 is almost 100% tar. I played with the option to rather do the "Tussen-Ons-fees" MTB race on Worcester Saturday morning, but some of the group did not cross DuToits kloof before...

Day 2 is +- 7km tar on the N1 to De Wet winery where you turn right. Another 10km tar before you get gravel. (the bit used by the PPA road race on the Sunday) Turn left on the gravel road to Toonjiesrivier that will take you to Vinkrivier/Rooiberg Cellar. there is a marked MTB route from just after the rail road left to the "train church". From there we took the 8km tar to Robertson, but with more time planning and contacts you should be able to organise private land access on the route used by the Epic in 2012. Use the single-track on the left to just before Ashton. 10km tar to Montague.

Day3+ is all dirt road.

Thanks - thought as much looking at your strava! The Freedom Challenge guys also have a route to Montague that is gravel, but you will have to find a way to miss Stettynskloof.

Ride sounds like a must do some time

The fc route in reverse is mostly off road from rawsonville. Problem is you’d have to do coenieskraal hill downhill. monster rocks tjaaina

Great pics - made me very jealous. I like the one with the Bergadder best. I hope you had some legs left over to ride the Swartberg Pass - one of those absolutely "must do" rides if you are in the area. Otherwise you'll just have to go back!

Am now thinking start SSW over Ox wagon trail to Grabouw and Botriver. Then find route to McGregor and then Montagu. After that follow same route
