Very true. And, if possible try to position yourself in the front 1/3 of the bunch when you hit Hekpoort. This allows you to gradually move to the back of the bunch - should you battle with the climb - and chances are that you will not get dropped and you can stick with the bunch for the rest of the race.

Sure Hekpoort is hard but really not impossible - as a good friend of mine always says, just granny-gear it out! :P

i always struggle to find a group, either too slow or too fast.but in this one i will make a point of staying with a group, even if it means cycling slower.

Yep first few races are sometimes frustrating but that will sort itself out as your seeding index improves and you get batched with riders of your fitness level.

Dude that's a good strategy, especially for the first 60km of the race (as Prozac says). Rather find a "slower" bunch that keeps a consistent pace (and which can shield you from the wind), than time trial alone and kill your legs halfway through. Yet again, like Prozac said, you can always shoot away after Hekpoort if you feel that the consistent bunch pace is too slow for you (and provided that the legs are up for that).

Hi guys...

Is there anywhere we can check to see the amount of climbing in this race, still new to the cycling thing and don't want to go in over my head?

Maybe a route profile?

These might help. Profile and route.

hi everyone...

this will be my 2nd race, first one was D2D, and the advice I received here helped me ALOT    although I still suffered :)

best advice for first time on this race... please please please. that Hekpoort climb looks "HECTIC", not to mention the long ride to it.

Don't let the long ride in to hekpoort fool you , if you with group that stretch feels flat !

Check some of the "advice" / suggestions earlier in the thread . . .

Sure it will make sense and help !

I'd say its more like I eventually dragged myself across the finish line... :)

have only done 1 104km(suppose to be easy),finished it,but after cutt off.so my aim is to finish before cutt off and to not be last :-)

Worst case is you walk up Hekpoort! I find the heat more of a killer!
