The route from Oudtshoorn up the Swartberg Pass and along the Gamkaskloof road into the Hell is very unlikely to suffer flood damage. The Swartberg Pass was specifically built as an alternative route for Meiringspoort (that is very prone to flooding and wash-aways). I know of only 1 occasion when flooding closed the Prince Albert approach road, and that was on a newer stretch, not the original pass (once in a 100 years). It just shows how well it was designed and built. Just about the only thing that makes it impassable to cars, is ice, which is unlikely this time of year. Getting big trucks up and into the Hell could be tricky in very wet & muddy weather and camping is never fun in the wet, but I cannot imagine how bad it must be to prevent a bike from going up there. 4x4s and quad-bikes will be able to get in anywhere on the route to recover cyclists because there are no remote single track on the route. I'm sure the organizers will let the safety / recovery / medevac people make the final call, and not cancel lightly. I would pack my best warm gear as well as wet gear if I was going up there this weekend. In a way I'm jealous. I love adventure. (My wife says I never grew up ;) )

It would be a disaster to cancel the event. It may be possible to do 2 "out and back loops from de hoek to the red stone hills and possibly a ride to Prins Albert and back. Hopefully the organizers have a contingency plan. Canceling the event should be a last resort.

G - when I spoke to Elmarie she mentioned something like that. Definite alternatives as you can imagine all is already catered for so I think it will be an absolute last resort.

Look on the bright side you may have this welcoming you.

Whatever the case, its going to be a proper mtb event.

Take extra brake pads - you will probably need them.
