Bass isn't my strong point........but......

They are ambush predators that keep near or in structure like reeds or weeds, from where they pounce on their prey. Big floating hair flies like mice and frogs make for exciting takes on the surface. Cast your fly as close to or even into the plants, let it sit for a second or 2, then make one or 2 short strips and let it sit again. If there is a fish, you will see its bow wave before it engulfs the fly, don't strike too soon. They are attracted to the noisy "plop" of the fly landing on the water and will come investigate, waiting a few seconds give the fish time to come closer before you make another "plop" like prey trying to escape, inducing a take. Anyhow, that's how I imagine the fish seeing my attempts. Use flies with a weed guard to prevent getting stuck in the water plants.  If this doesn't work, also try bigger woolley worms, red eyed damsels or minnow imitations, retrieved underwater with a jerky movement, try imitate the kind of swimming a wounded minnow or insect would make. Best time is just before dark when the Bass often comes out to feed in the shallows.

Where are you going?

Landed a small Grunter this morning at the Sedgefield mouth. It's my first salt water catch. I must admit it was like shooting fish in a barrel though. So many fish there thus morning. Still waiting for a leerie.

A mate of mine has had good success targeting Bass at Brookwood using a black Woolly Bugger with just the tail of a Junior Fluke on the hook of the Fly. Give it a try.

Is this place right near Glen burn lodge? If so, I slayed there with black woollies with purple flash.

Headed to Saddle and Trout on Boxing day. Fished there last year and had reasonable success. Going back this year hoping to catch the same buggers only a bit more grown up... ;)

Mainly targeting bass in the big dam next to the road. Flogged the small dam after being told there were fish.... not a single bite.

We'll try again this year!

You can keep the leerie, skippies are where its at!

Salt fly is always fun though, you dont catch as often but when you do its awesome.

:D I'll be the first to admit that I'm scared of barbell ;)

I'm not exactly scared of them, but wont touch them with my bare hands, always have a pair of grinding gloves close when I know I might encounter them.

No luck in Hermanus this morning. Many of the blokes out there said that huge leeries got hooked last night.

Yes, that is the one.

Same Fly too, if I recall correctly, just with the heresy of a Junior Fluke tail added(my mate is a hardcore conventional tackle Bass  Fisherman).

When I get back I'll give this a go. We fished hard today. Great Scott. More drop shot than flies though.

Rods are for sissies.

Went Hillbilly Handfishing on the Spruit this morning.

I will leave the noodling to you crazy peeps.

I grew up in the sea and the only thing you found in a crayfish hole if you tried to noodle was a moray eel!

I like my fingers...
