I've used a normal clipboard, cut in half or 2/3 and cable tied to bars. Worked well

I made one using an old camping mattress foam piece, then sewed a sleeve around it with velcro sewn onto the bottom. Then sewed another sleeve with a clear plastc top and waterproof non stretch fabric and velcro tabs so it all fits snug, stays rigid and is mostly waterproof (for rain and drizzle, not diving or dropping your bike in the river).

Its soft so if/when you fall it doesnt break but the non stretch fabric keeps it rigid. I attached it by rubber glueing some plastic squates onto the foam, some washers and a bolt with nyloc nut so it still rotates, with some pvc pipe end which actually fits perfectly into an old tri bar clamp on mount..... Boom!

It survived Freedom this year and is still going strong....... But probably difficult if you cant sew....

edit: eish I wrote this badly!

Maybe a better design is the one the Paris Dakar chaps use.... although quite how they roll it forward manually at 180 kph on dirt I don't know.....

As all things it was under development... Mark 2 is shaping up to be awesome! The clear top sleeve no longer folds to create corners.....

Seriously, the design is good, just the refinements need tweaking!
