Reid winning back to back marathon champs is reminiscent of Burry, XCO racer, XCO training but could still pull off Epic wins, a medal at marathon world champs at a young age when everyone says/thinks marathon is for the older guys who need to specialize in marathon cause they are not competitive in XCO any more.

Reid will go far is he is prepared to battle overseas and smash local races while he is home.

Don't forget that James also snapped his chain at 13kms, fixed it and chased back and still rode everyone off his wheel.

I was lucky/unlucky enough to race the XCM with them, and I can say on that course the strongest man won fair and square.

If the normal marathon guys are moaning that it was to technical and not enough rolling roads then go do a road race, this is MTB and National Champs to boot so it should be the toughest race in the calender.

when I read that I thought to myself - yikes this oke is going places. We need to give this young chap as much support as possible to be able to groom him for the next olympics - and having BS tuning him will only add to his desire...so BS keep making stupid comments please

Good subjective race report by Max, wish the others could learn from the Sabie Gardener. http://www.sssenterprise.co.za/south-african-marathon-championships-pietermaritzburg/

However the juniors are now throwing their toys on Twitter as Buys was selected for Commonwealth and they feel Reid should have gone, even saying Jeroen was in on it as a selector, to which he then replied he had stepped down to avoid a conflict of interest.

Can understand them spitting their dummies, the selection criteria was crystal clear and James Reid should have been selected.

Not sure I should be commenting on this thread, but, I would like to comment on the Reid / Commonwealth games issue:

He has won the selection races including the race up at Afriski (Lesotho where he beat everyone (elites included) by a substantial margin). Wins SA marathon champs (Not XCO but shows his on form).

Congrats to Phil Buys and nothing against him but I really feel that Reid should have been selected 10x before Phil. Everything needs to be done according to the rider that has the best chance of a medal, Reid has a slim chance but Buys has no chance. If Buys proves me wrong, which I hope he does, I would be the first to admit it

if its the same course as worlds and clearly JR proved to be best suited, they should all work for him...or am I over simplifying this...I like KE idea, and I am sure he is talking about Reid when it comes to getting a saffa on the podium. Also this will mean huge confidence boost for JR if they(the whole team) pulls it off..
