Haglofs Silva, Avaya, Naturex all nearing T1. You think they will risk going out, and possibly have to sleep where it can't be counted?

they have to try. if they don't go then they've burnt a lot of matches for nothing.

the only reason to stay is to bank sleep. which they could do later.

I see how this works now. If you cane it along the run, you get to get some kip in this 'dark zone'.

I was just thinking it would be near impossible to navigate rapids and whatnot in the rafting section, at night - but I now read that they pull you off at night.

Jabberwock

Cobus v Zyl - not sure he raced for Merrel? Since I knew about him about 15 years ago he's always raced for Jabberwock. Great navigator.

Janneke Laesk - she used to race for various teams before Jabberwock. Exceptionaly strong runner and  mountain biker (like all the other women in this race).  She won the cape pioneer a few years ago. Cannot sit still. Famous for her selfies during adventure races from her bike with the team mates lagging somewhere behind

Sad to see Jabberwock out, Janneke with a broken arm, sadly this is racing.

Painted Wolf also out, John with ITB

Few other notes on racers...

Craig is a machine cyclist, 5mins looking at his 94,7 results will give you enough of an understanding there.

Also seem to remember Grant Ross cycled from Scotland to Cape town?

Nicky will again race Munga mtb this year so she will have a week or two rest to prepare for that.

Leo is a machine, he took the win at Wartrail this year. Also played cricket overseas for a few years.

Also notable is that Lance and Robyn are the only siblings to win the dusi the same year which is pretty epic IMO.

Back to the race, Cyanosis are looking good, they did some damage on the paddle legs and will probably do more on the kayak section. Nic keeping them on track as usual.

Merrel grinding away as they do best slowly moving up the rankings and getting stronger as the race goes.

Red Ants managed to miss the dark zone last night and made some good progress into the cycle this morning.

Badly drawn Hyena are on the 2nd paddle section for the packraft leg, they should be on the cycle mid afternoon.

Avaya who was Seagate and have won World champs 5 times in the last 6 years are looking strong. Naturex and Haglofs Silva will not let off in their chace so it will be a close finnish, all three shouldn't be affected by the kayak dark zone.

Now another note- Reunion Island has a massive shark problem, for I think 5 years now swimming in the ocean has been banned, so I am sure the teams will be very very careful on the ocean kayak leg and obey the dark zones properly there...

How much/what do you have to pack in your pack(...) for the trek sections? the bags look huge.

And how weighted are you for the mtb sections? these are surely actual trails? is it even possible to self nav offroad bike? I'm asking because (the obvious reasons aside) the suggested speeds are pretty slow.

The Genesis of Adventure Racing

In 2002 Mark and John Collins, along with teammates Phillip Swanepoel and Michelle Lombardi travelled to Fiji to take part in Mark Burnett’s Eco Challenge: The Expedition Race.

Not only did the Eco Challenge put adventure racing, as we’ve come to know it today, on the map - it was also recognised as the birth of ‘reality’ television, airing on channels like MTV, VHS, ESPN and Discovery and in doing so, bringing it to the masses.

Mark Burnett, pictured below with the team who finished in 4th place, went on to conceptualise and produce reality shows like Survivor, the Contender and the Apprentice. Michelle Lombardi retired from the sport and remains close friends with the brothers while Phillip Swanepoel (far left) tragically passed away 2007 in a helicopter accident. He remains a big influence over the team's passion for racing and the adventure racing community at large.

normally 6-8kgs

but there's loads of gear in this race, so the packs are probably about 10kgs average it seems.

for the packraft section add

packraft (4-6kgs, 2 per team)

paddles

wetsuits

climbing harness

climbing gear

and not much space left for biltong

The gear for this race has been ridiculous...

They also were advised to carry min of 5l of water for certain sections of the race and parts of that first trek.

The mtb has full on dedicated hike a bike sections as well usually it is trails, dirt roads, forestry and sugarcane roads but ya the cycle down to the coast has a section they have to hike a bike from what I have heard.

to give you an idea of training, a guy I raced with few years back is now in NZ, a few weeks back he joined some guys for a 'training weekend.' They hiked 60km into the mountains carrying packrafts and climbing gear and camping gear, on the sat camped that night , paddled back down a river on the sunday with few abseils along the way casual weekend away for them...
