Just a Second - Campaign

Great initiative Wyatt.

On Monday morning on the coastal road which I often cycle between Melkbosstrand and Table View, a lady driver passed away when her car collided with an oncoming Golden Arrow bus. If you look at the wreckage of her car, it seems to me she was distracted at speed - probably just for a second. It could have been me on my bike that she hit.

Thanks Mango.

I've started compiling a map on Google Maps - still in the testing out phase :) For the map I need to add / obtain a lot more information. Exact/approximate locations of accidents - not just city level and then dates, etc

For some of the accidents I remember / seen on thehubsa here is a prelim view. I am very open to suggestions on what to include / remove, etc. At the moment it groups the accidents per province and the icon colours shows whether the accident was fatal or not

Great idea.

Excellent initiative Anton. This morning I drove to East London, and while passing a truck, thought that if we could get some of the transport co's on board. Most dangerous thing that I've noticed is vehicles moving into the yellow lane on blind corners and rises. This and people cutting corners are the things that stop me from riding on tar.

Quite frankly I dont know why im posting this. But im so peeved im going to anyway!

Just 1h ago we were driving through hillcrest.

Saw three rather 'serious' looking roadies with some TDF team jerseys and what not...

These bafoons jumped a red light, made vehicles stop and drive around them (who had the green light), and zapped a motorist who honked at them.

next week theres another thread on the hub... "hit and run / cyslist downed /when will this end" or whatever...

This has been said ad nauseum. If you wish to be respected, you need to respect the rules!

If these guys would just take a bloody second to think and wait for the green light the world would be a better place!

I am on a serious 'anti texting while driving' campeign.

It has become and epidemic. I notice it when I commute to work and 3 out of 5 people are driving while texting. It is SO dangerous.

With a broken ankle I have been forced to rather painfully drive my trok far more than normal and yesterday I was driving down a straight road when a small Hyundai about 300m up the road started drifting into my lane. I waited and they drifted more. I hooted and clearly saw the lady behind the wheel get such a fright, drop/fling her phone and swerve. She promptly over corrected and had to screech to a halt to avoid colliding with another car sitting in the hospital exit.

The super slow take off at traffic lights then the accellaration to then go through an orange/red light where all the frustrated motorists follow is unacceptable.

Texting and driving, being in a rush and a general lack of respect for anyone other than themselves on the road is creating a horrible environment on our roads and a massively unsafe place to ride, run and walk.

I am on board. Big time.

I really think this is a brilliant idea. I have been cycling for approximately 12 years now, and the problem has now got out of hand. Cyclists blaming cars and cars blaming cyclists. Both camps need to "walk the talk" and stop blaming, and importantly, think for a second.

I have an idea that might assist. Plenty cyclists have gopro type cameras. Strap them on your bike during training rides, also stick it in your car. If you record any ass, car or bike making "nonsense", upload to a site, not too sure how you would work it.

Then name and shame, cyclists, motorists or companies. Someone would have to control the content, to prevent misuse, abuse, etc.

Maybe this would help, you guys would know best.
