Fat Bike

i've taken a short spin on the fatty up for display at knysna cycles a few days ago.  are the wheels supposed to be that heavy?

I couldn't get the front wheel up for a wheelie or a hop for the life of me.  I thought they would be more fun after seeing Chris Akrigg's video playing on the beach, but I could hardly ride up a pavement with that bike.

There's probably a slight skill differene between yourself and Chris Akrigg  :w00t:. But yes, the wheels are heavy - especially factory fitted options and especially on these cheaper fattys that are appearing everywhere. Cheap tubes are 600 - 800g each by themselves. Lighter tubes around 250g (can lose 1kg just by fitting quality tubes or going tubeless). Then cheap tyres are also moerse heavy. Plus hubs and rims on these cheaper bikes will be heavy and budget. People forget that these cheap fattys are equivalent to the cheapest Merida's, Titan's etc - some boardering on Makro/ Game bikes so the components spec is going to be poor, heavy parts. While some may have decent componentary they'll have heavy rims etc - same old story with cheap bikes really...

Add to this that these bikes are by nature bulky and clumsy and when the going is slow are they are hard work - once they're on the move though and up to speed, they're a heap of fun. I had many fun rides on mine at Karkloof including drops, gaps and fast flowing singletrack.

Ok, I'm back in the office again....dammm!!

I'm struggling with my tubeless setupp....I'll appreciate some help here...!!

I have put 2 layers of orange ducktape over the original rim tape, then on the sides I have put 6mm high density foam around and that helps that I can seat the tyre even with my little compressor at home and I have put a bit more than double the amount of Stans into theses tyres than into my normal 29'ers tyres....BUT...they work well but are leaking where the rim gets together and I cant get it to seal there.

It looks to me as if those rims are not made for tubeless, I'm talking about the Silverback Double Scoop....

What I was thinking to do now ...is to take the biggest 26'er tube I can get, cut it on the seam and then use it as "rim tape" and also let it stick out between the tyre and the rim to help seal it there and then cut the rest off that's sticking out..

Any suggestions on what will work,  please!!

I definitely wants to go tubeless and the tyres says tubeless ready.

24" or 26" ??

I don't think a normal tube is wide enough if cut on the seam to still stick out at the edges of the rim, must I take the widest tube I can find? I dont know the dimensions of my rim but its about 100mm wide.

Needs to be 24" otherwise it won't be tight enough on the rim. (these rims are 26")

If you split the tube down the center it will fit. Then trim the edges off...

Hopefully today is the day I pull the trigger.

As usual, being SA, you have to battle to spend your cash as no one has stock or even cares to take your number and help.

Pathetic.

Will probably grab a Spez if available.

Thanks guys for the advice.

I couldn't find a wide enough 24" or 20" mtb tube so got a 21" motorbike tube, very expensive, R145, but split it and it worked 100%.

It didn't loose any air during the night, will wait another day or two and then trim the extra piece of tube sticking out.

Coming Saturday I'm off to Jonkershoek to test the Fatty on some single tracks.

Why not have a chat to Grant at Sprocket & Jack. I'm sure he'll be able to hook you up with either a Pugsley, Moonlander or even an Ice Cream Truck.

What Thug said.

Sounds like you're looking in the wrong places.

If you're set on a Spez speak to Greg Minnaar Cycles - I know they're in PMB but I'm sure they'll help you out. good guys and good service.
