Broken bones - how long before you could ride again?

@Peach, a broken arm is one thing, but you seem to make a hobby of it! If I've broken as many times as you have, you'll find me looking like this:

To compound Peach's problems, he's also colourblind so he can't tell the difference between red flags and green flags. This apparently also incurs expenses when he's choosing his ambulance.

How did you chop your finger with your rotor?

Spin the weel, check the spacing between rotor and disc and hand slipped and finger got trapped between fork (at the inner part of the rotor) at an angel - so the rotor came down at angle with finger (thus sharp edge) and just went straight through. Total accidental slip of the hand!!! And the wheel wasn't even spinning fast - those rotors are dangerous (now I know). Trust me, I'm now a lot more careful

To all the colarbone breakers, thanks for the feedback.

Peach, only problem with mine was that it was displaced by about 3 inches after the break. So my right shoulder was literally 3 inches narrower than my left shoulder....chicks DONT dig the Gimp look !

Will go see specialist in January as i feel decrepid and useless !

Thanks to all

Best to see specialists. I don't think much about the ER doctors when it comes to injuries.

Aye! I've twice been told I didn't have anything wrong by the ER. First time was a fractured sternum, second was a break and fracture throug the ball of the shoulder and a torn bicep. In their defense, it's apparently hard to pick up fractures from x-rays immediately after the injury.

I have even come across specialists that make a bad call.

Everyone makes a dodgy call from time to time... depends how much pressure there is at the time.... sometimes you have to make the leap of faith... :)

I shattered my wrist in 2007 riding motocross. After 5 days in hospital I was operated on and had pins, screws and a plate inserted.

I was on an IDT within a week of the accident.

I rode MTB including about 100m of single track (too painful) 1 month to the day of the accident.

Sometimes it is not about the shortterm result. Your wrist would be relatively stable after fixation- it is more about the longterm complications. In this case the concern would be arthritis of the wrist. This could take years to rear its ugly head. I would give it time to heal initially since the salvage is not great. It is part and parcel of cycling to HTFU but nobody reports about the longterm adverse outcomes. Often the Dr is trying to give you the longterm view - working with your hand, picking up your kids or wiping your arse seems more important in the longrun that just how quickly you can cycle again. Not aimed at you, just making a general point.

Broke Humerus (spiral fracture) left arm only 2 months before I was due to do my first Argus! Had a titanium plate with 10 screws inserted (permanent hardware). Took 12 weeks with physio to heal to the point that I could ride again. Still hurt but I was just happy to be on my bike.

Update:

My docter gave me the green light to cycle again at the end of March.  My arm has healed much better than expected, and I have regained all functionality of it.  The bone hasn't refilled completely yet, there is still a scoop/slice missing in the ulna, but that should be filled up by November.

Looking at some of the pics in this thread I'm very happy with how my fall turned out - it could have been much worse!
