You guys will probably laugh at this - but aside from a lingering neck issue, and unfamiliar terrain, my biggest worry for the March 600 is the hotel bed!

The hard floors of LEL meant there was zero incentive to sleep longer than you had too - so it was relatively easy to think "I must get up and go ride some more". I rode with one guy who had failed on his previous LEL, and he put it down to using B&Bs. In the end, he just couldn't motivate himself away from the comfort and back out onto the road, the dark, the weather etc. He reckoned the relative lack of comfort discomfort of the controls helped him succeed this time.

So I'm really hoping the Lido beds are like McDonalds chairs - only comfortable for a short while. I may actually ask management to make mine extra hard if possible ... ;)

Edit - removed 'discomfort'' in case the LEL organizers stumble across this. Wouldn't want to be seen to criticise their amazing efforts and cause them not to invite SA riders back!

Hi There

Can anybody advise me as to the terrain on the Audax 200km -

Heidelberg>Devon>Nigel>Lido>Henley on Klip>Dasville>Lido/Finish

23rd Feb

Lido Hotel

400/200

I have recently done 130km around the Cradle with most of the decent climbs and would like to know how I would fare on the 200km Audax coming up as per the above...

Thanks!

It is flatter than the Cradle, but the wind and the distance will get to you!!

As one can't have outside asistance, does that mean you must carry all your food and drink or can one "stash" it at the checkpoints? For the 200km at what distances are the checkpoints?

Please forgive the maybe dumb questions....

Checkpoints are at shops and you can buy food & drinks. You'll have details before you start so know what to expect.

Buying stuff/filling up water bottles at garages - Perfectly OK

Have someone take stuff for you to a checkpoint - Maybe

Have a support vehicle follow you - No

The checkpoints very from route to route. Eddy will send you the route closer to the time, and it will have the checkpoints on it. For a 200km, there will probably be 3 or 4 point. So maybe at 50km, 100km, 150km.

I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for the information.

Think I will do it after Argus so as to avoid injuries...

If possible I would prefer to stash stuff at a checkpoint so as to be able to stay drinking Cytomax and not revert to Ener-Powerade.....

I use to carry my Fit/Hammer in a small backpack since I also don't do the Energade thing. Then last year in June, is was flippen cold, so I drank mostly coffee and the controls points. No issues to complete the 200 km.

On another 200km, I got gatvol of Fit. I reverted back to what I had in my water bottle in the '80s. Half water:half coke - and it still works like a charm.

Now I carry basically no food with. Start with 2 bottles of Hammer, drink coffee, joghurt and choc milkies at the stops, eat a few banana's and perhaps a sandwitch. 200km foodwise is not that far.

My biggest tip for Audaxing - lose the energy drinks. I used to use them on road races, but when I started doing Audax I weened myself off them. As the events get longer they just create logistical problems you don't need, and when you get to 24hr+ events, your tummy may rebel against them too.

The replacement for me is electrolyte tabs (High5s and Rehydrate sport) which are easy to carry - 1 or 2 bottles with those in per day. Then plenty of real food eaten regularly i.e. at each control, or pickup at control and eat along the way. I used to carry a Gel or sachet of powder for emergencies when first started the regime, but don't even bother with those now. I find my body works better with long endurance fuel, not short sharp shock fuel. The two concessions I give to this are occasionally tossing a bottle of coke in one water bottle, and ice cream or cake if a cofffe along is not enough to lift a slump.

Just my views .... YMMMV
