Bell end!!

Can you see downhill

Dips should enter this, means he doesnt have to pedal

No no. There are uphill bits. I think overall you drop over 2km in 32km. It's ridiculous. Plus there's some TDF history too cos the race happens around Alp du Huez.

People that I've spoken to that have done it reckon a 160mm bike is best (there is some uphill)

I think you have to use body armor and a full face lid (you'd want to anyway) Then of course some bits an pieces for trailside repairs like broken chains and flats etc.

No special rubber?

I would surely like to take this on, I saw it for the first time last year and its on my must-do-within-3 years list. I am saving up for it, but will not make the capital this year.

2015!!!!!Mega!!!

You just don't get the mayhem element of the mass start.

The mayhem is what puts me off, the vast majority of crashes are a result of riders ploeging into each each other out of control.

Maybe if I don a wig and some make up I could enter as a girl...in the hope of there being less mayhem

ok maybe a lot of make up...

Nice. I hate the term bucket list.

Like I said previously there are companies that specialize in this event. Alpine Elements springs to mind but there are others. It's probly best to book through an outfit like that if you're a first timer.

A lot of brits camp (for free) in the campsite and do the event. Bunch of cheapskates.

Hahaha. Those chicks are pretty agro bru.

Got to say I'm 1000% with you on that. getting taken out within 30m of the start by 80 other okes isn't really that attractive to me.

I've not done it myself but I spoke to a pom when I was in France in July and he reckoned the way it works is you do the seeding race and then you get seeded into those starting pens where the mayhem happens but if you don't qualify for one of the groups you can just go down in your own time when those okes are gone. So if you aren't into the craziness you hang back in the seeding race.

but if you 'fraid of the mayhem, and you go down 'later', is it still really the megavalanche, or just another trail run down a french hill?

Fair point. However that "just another trail run down a french hill" drops 2600m in 32km. So I wouldn't use the words just. Or hill for that matter.

used just for contrast purposes ;) but i reckon if you qualify, go for the madness. It's what defines the megavalanche for the event that it is to begin with. Scary no doubt, but you getting full value for your ronds.

Ja for sure. Don't quote me but I think there's 10 batches of 200. The fast boys obviously start first. With the *** French techno and the heli in attendance.

Then after the first 2000 the plebs and people who had mechanicals in the seeding run get to go. Which is rad TBH. Imagine going all the way to France and not doing the mega cos of a broken derailleur?

The Epic has no attraction for me but I think if I finish off my riding experience without doing the Mega I'll be very disappointed in myself.

Thanks Omega I will defs check out the outfitters sometime. It would be cool if a group of us Saffers can go! We'll show those pommies how it should be done.

In a few years this will be one of our http://www.sa-alpine-addiction.co.za/ offerings. But I need to do one first. (shameless plug)

There is also the il de la Reunion Megavalanch. Same concept but less riders, no snow, and you get to chill on a paradise island beach all afternoon. Its a little later in the year, around November time.
