Thanks guys.

A donation even from as far as the Spriut? Rata, you know very well..

Looks like the boys will have new gloves to go with their new shoes from Christmas. PPA bought some really nice Hitec safety boots and rain suits for the crew. Wish I could describe their gratitude.. Wait till I tell them where the gloves come from!

Any money left over will be used for continued work..

well done everyone - so nice to see guys getting behind the volunteer trail builder and helping out the community as well as the trails.

Awesome Job ... this is what riding needs

Just for interest's sake, what is the amount of funding you guys are getting for 2014?

Still uncertain at the moment, and it's all private funding for the moment. That's how we got the bakkie and managed to pay petrol & wages for the last 10 months of 2013.

As for this year - it's a lot more, but it is taking a while to come through due to various issues that need to ironed out before the funds are released. Just things like forming a Voluntary Association, opening up the tax-neutral bank account (and all the paperwork that requires - sheesh!) and then drumming up the ACTUAL cash.

Final figures are as yet unknown though.

Nico, nothing is guaranteed for the year. I calculated a budget of about 350k but this was before the rain damage to the Switchbacks and the accelerated harvesting of the remaining trees. Looks like 2014 will see more removal of trees from iconic trails. I will need to relook the costs and take temp labour into account to cart tons of material down the Switchbacks (looks like it will be getting an entire rebuild which I can't say is a bad thing..)

Corporates will hopefully get behind the initiative, the meetings I have had with several well known names is positive and the few people helping drive this common goal of making Tokai sustainable is helping immensely. Unfortunately there are the critics and when mentioning numbers such as these, a strange shift in their attitude seems to overcome them. The budget will take care of a manager and several staff as well as maintenance of equipment and fuel. Tokai has received support from PPA in the past and this will be used for external contractors (and additional material/equipment if needed).

Gulp, thanks Oufy.. and DJR, Canadonis and ayjay.

I was paid a visit on Monday by Gavin who is for all purposes, the "foreman" of the Tokai crew. Seems the last month without work has been tough on all their families... We would normally not ask this of you guys but at the moment while we wait for all the funding mechanisims to kick in, we don't have much choice. I have known some of these guys for almost 10 years and now know all the members of their families too - what humble and honest people. They take great pride in their work and they know so much about the construction of trails now, it shows especially when it rains. ;)

Myles, what a great response!

Bank details below..

TokaiMTB

Bank: Nedbank

Branch: 104309 Tokai (Blue Route)

A/c no: 1061962245

Type: Current account

(Note: if you are paying from an ABSA, select Cheque account, I struggled for weeks!)

is this account specific to tokai donations? I would like to donate, even though your 500 bucks may have been reached. Perhaps the account can be used as a sort of 'Fund' where we could donate when necessary. I say dont stop at just collecting the 500, lets make it R2000 and really get the ball rolling.

Just incredible work, guys. Especially when bureaucracy is 50% of the labour.

Hi Survo, yes this account is SOLELY for Tokai MTB. That means either money for fuel, wages, materials or contracting, FOR THE TRAILS. Every cent goes back into the trail, even wages - the okes work, and hard!

Yes, you do know.. Tokai is a little more than 50% however. This process needs to go public which I know will be added frustration. MTB needs a nod from hikers, horse riders, dog walkers, paragliders, mountain climbers, fisherman and amoeba on Saturn.

Made a donation of R200. It's the least I can do. Thanks for all the hard work guys. Despite me not getting up there much in the last year due to family commitments, I really appreciate the work you guys are doing up there.

Surv0.. you are spot on. We are not pressing too hard for donations until we have the correct facilities in place. A funding document and website are almost complete and as Capt says, a VA tax exemption is required but takes long to process, 3 months has been quoted.. Getting the bank account was a task of note. Very strict control is in place to account for monies collected and will soon be made public on the site..

What I would really like to see happen is for the staff wages for the year to be covered by the CT public. These guys are essentially working on the trails that the public are using, so bottom line would be to have X amount people donate RX amount each and essentially employ their own staff to work on their own trails for the year, call it "green fees" (eg. 1000 x R100). Riders have always owned the trails, we have just never had the group to manage talks, funds and staff.. TokaiMTB is this group and has been 10+ years in the making.

The managers salary should be covered by corporate funding.
