I love them, good side walls.

Had on my previous 26er bike, replacing my Schwalbe's on my 650b with them ASAP.

Starting with Race King for the rear this week.

Ust is UST! Universal standard, made to work with UST rims

Thicker sidewalls and heavier then protection versions

Have UST X-Kings - have never had an issue in 14months since fitted!

Copied from a previous thread:

The reason why you won't find a UST labelled Schwalbe and in fact Contis is due to the process and cost:

"Background: Mavic holds a patent on a specific rim-bed shape and the corresponding tire-bead shape, which it licenses to other companies. To ensure compatibility across brands, however, a product must be certified before it can bear the UST label. According to Maxime Brunand, Mavic's product manager, an independent lab in Belgium is responsible for granting "technical approval" of products (tires and/or rims). Upon passing the lab's tests, Mavic grants a five-year license for that product to bear the UST logo."

So basically, for any manufacturer to put the UST logo onto their tires they need to send n+1 number (Who knows how many) of samples to the Mavic testing facility for approval, at their own expense as well as pay Mavic for the license and a "royalty" for every tire sold with the logo on.

Conti's license expired and thus they decided to not renew the license but rather re-label their "UST" tires as "Protection". This is also the reason why many of the other manufacturers came up with their own naming to reflect UST compatible tires i.e. Shwalbe -> Snakeskin, Conti -> Protection etc.

I bought Geax tyres, took them to my lbs to fit.

Apparently the tyres won't fit over my ztr crest rims.

According to them it is a factory default tyre???

Do you even get something like that?

Bobbo SA, I am confused, your post said Protection and UST the same but on Continentals website the sidewall of Protection = 240 TPI and UST = 330 TPI and the UST version weight is roughly 100g more for 26inch, and no 29 inch UST available for the x-kings

Also only Protection versions has Black Chilli compound.

I dont agree they the same tyres.

Hahah that is a lot of mis-information. Maxxis, Schwalbe and Conti does put UST on their 26" tires. The reason why they do not make UST tyres in 29er is because it`s too heavy and because "tubeles-ready" works well enough. Protection and UST is not the same! Exo and UST is not the same! Snakesin and UST is not the same!

UST has nothing to do with sidewall or any other part of the construction, only the bead shape and size to ensure that it will seat in the bed of a UST rim within certain tolerances.

Using the sidewalls and tread as an indication is useless, every tire manufacturer will make changes to the tire as they change materials and construction to achieve the same strength.

"UST tyres are heavier and more expensive as they need to be completely air tight.

UST rims are heavier as they have two layers of metal, one for the spoke holes, and then another undrilled layer to make them airtight. Plus UST rims need different spokes and nipples as there is no access from the other side.

Tubeless Ready tyres are cheaper and lighter as they can be slightly porous, yes you need to add sealant but most people run sealant in their UST tyres for the added puncture protection anyway.

Tubeless ready rims are lighter as they rely on rimstrips (or yellow tape for Stans) to make the spoke holes airtight, rather than more metal. Stans (and possibly others) also use standard nipples and spokes."

The UST are a bugger to get on though. Some Protection models leak a bit of air but just paint the inside with sealant. They also take a little longer to seat properly.Just use some sunlight liquid on the beads.
