From Giant P-XC2 29 wheelset to ... ?

Hi Hubbers! Since I've been a roadie most of my cycling life I know much more about road parts and wheels than about MTBs and accessories. Since I'm doing a random MTB race at the end of March in the Cape area I was wondering if you can help with a wheels question?

I have the 2013 Giant XTC Composite 29er 1 which came out with the Giant P-XC2 29 wheelset (hubs: Giant Tracker QR15, sealed cartridge bearings; spokes: DT Swiss Competition) and which I already converted to tubeless.

Now as far as I understand and what I've read it seems they are "bomb proof", "sturdy" and "all round good quality wheels".

What do you guys in the know think about whether I should be upgrading to maybe lighter/better wheels and if yes, what lighter/better wheels? I don't want to go superlight, because I do value strong quite high, but I understand the wheels are relatively heavy and that there might be better options out there?

Thank you for your time!

Will you only be doing one random race or will you be focusing more on MTB than Road?

If only occasionally and random races I would say stick with the stock wheels.

If you really want to spend dosh on something better or lighter... ZTR with Hope hubs or AM Classics....

Upgrading those wheels is a must do on that bike! It will transform it into the race machine it is meant to be.

American Classic Tubeless 29er or American Classic Race 29er wheels.

So you have the same steed as I do... this is 10,6kg

The wheels made a massive difference and then also the other light little odds and bobs too

Those P-XC2 are bomb proof but heavy. I upgraded to the American Classics and the bike just felt so much better.

But these CITEC wheelset looks good on this Giant..

It was a toss up between the AM classics initially but I wanted different so Eldron and I had a chat and this was the end result...

I got the very first set apart from his own

He has two different front wheels for rider weights, an 18 spoke and a 24 spoke... my front is an 18 spoke

Never thought I would say this BUT be careful before you go and drop hard earned cash on American Classic Race. They are light but they are not strong. If you want American Classic go for normal version and not Race.

Thanks guys!

I would like to get a balance between road and mtb so not only one random mtb race.

It seems the good choices are between the American Classics and the Citec.

Thanks Johan. That is exactly one of my dilemmas. I don't want to give up too much strength for weight.

Yes I agree. The normal Tubeless version is best. I have heard and seen failures on Race sets.

Love it ChUkky! It's amazing how wheelsets can transform the whole look of the bike. I'm pretty comfortable with my XT/SLX mix, but if I have to, what would be the best to upgrade first?

Basically only the Rear Derailleur and Crankset are XT and the other components are SLX.

Important questions:

  • How heavy are you
  • Based on your roadie back ground and how you approach other sports, are you a go large or go home (Would/could you be the kind of rider that will ride technical single track hard or tentatively) and do you spend lots of hours in the saddle
  • Do you have a rough idea on what you would be willing to spend on a new set of wheels?
