Hubbers,

I'm about to bite the bullet in getting another 29er wheelset. Nothing fancy.... Arch EX rims laced to Hope hubs.

Now, who has ordered the custom wheel sets from CWC or Buycycle or etc. (online shops)? What is the build quality like?

I see CWC use Phil Wood spokes vs Buycycle that use Pillar Spokes? Or should I rather buy the components and get a reputable wheel-builder to build me a set?

Make sure they triple lace the spokes front and rear

MadMarc.....you mean 3x cross front & rear?

Also, how does the build quality compare between the shops?

I used CWC for mine, also Arch EX, went with what they suggested as far as the spokes are concerned and asked them to pimp the nipples for color coding purposes. Have ridden the bike hard since then and have had no problems at all.

As far as i'm concerned, they guys on the other end of the phone were knowledgeable and very helpful, I would use them again in a heart beat.

The one thing that concerns me is that usually hand-built wheelsets need a re-truing / re-tension after the first few rides. Do you have someone nearby who will deal with this?

Hi Nico.... Spokeworks (Ruan) is 1km away from my office. Hence, my question....

Pre-build CWC wheels ,or components and then Spokeworks build? CWC pre-build is the cheaper option....but how good is the quality of their workmanship?

On the other hand.... I've got one wheel-set from Spokeworks already. In my opinion Ruan is the GURU when it comes to wheel building.

Why are you even asking, get Ruan to do them and he's right there if anything is needed.

Properly built wheels don't need retruing, if yours have to be retrued, use another wheel builder

All the good spokes (Pillar, Phil Wood, DT Swiss, Sapim, Wheelsmith and I am sure some others) use Sandvik stainless steel and the quality variances should be minimal. Just make sure you compare like with like (butting and gauge). As for the quailty of the wheelbuild only time and mileage will tell.

Yes on a 29er they much more rigid the standard 2x cross the rims felt like rubber when cornering.

Not sure on build quality because all my rebuilds i got yellow Saddle to do. But they not around anymore. My ZTR Flows i got from Solomons who built them with Hope hubs, i have no complaints and never needed re-truing.

Just check, I think that CWC stocks straight pull hope hubs. I may be wrong though....

I asked about that today. The CWC build is J Bends. Didn't even know there were straight pull evo2s only knew about the straight pulls for road.

Have OB at Epic sports build your wheels - the man is a wizard!

Finally made up my mind.

Next bummer!!! Nobody has stock of the new Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs with 40t engagement in SA! Next shipment from Intl Trade only 3-4 weeks.

I would like to support the local cycle trade in SA.... But if this is how you manage stock in SA.... I might support CRC!

Thanks David. Comparing apples with apples is valid.
