This is very interesting. .. it seems like it is tyre (the material composite they use) dependent maybe. Maybe we can start writing our tyres down and see if there is some link.

On my XC bike I bought April 2011, rode till March 2012 with same sealant no punctures, over 2000km. Changed tyres to slicks for Argus. Was Maxxis Monorail and Crossmark. Yes there were a bit of solid rubber balls, but more liquid in tyre.

Like I said, current setup on AM, over 2600km, no punctures (incl doing downhill trails). Schwalbe Hans Dampfs front and back.

Let us do this study!

(I'll start drawing up a tyre chart on your replies tomorrow. )

OK, my contribution to "scientific research"..

8 Maxxis Crossmarks (non-UST), using Stans, regularly topped up, over a period of 2 years, no bombs used, one gave a massive booger, nothing in the other 7?

Not very helpful is it ;)

There must be somebody on the hub who can give an answer (other than the obvious pH changing problem with the CO2 from bombs? )

I'd hazard a guess at it having something to do with the coagulation being "seeded" by the presence of smaller bits of coagulated latex being snagged on something inside the tyre (e.g. a thorn) or simply the latex that forms to plug a hole in the event of the tyre being punctured. ?

Someone please educate me...

Been using Stans in mine and no issues with boogers or leaks. When cleaning my bike i check and remove thorns, slight milky leak then it seals, top up about every three months. I've even used stans to repair small tube punctures. Remove tube from tyre, insert stans into tube, fit back on tyre, spin, pump up and spin again to settle.

If I see someone with a flat, I ask them one question to see if I will help him. Did you use Stans - if the reply is no, I just go on my merry way. I simply don't like dealing with idiots.

What he said ..........

keep doing it like this, and the answer is in the method, not the make of sealant.

spot on...it's like rainfall...the Stans will need a little "seed" to start coagulating...one it started..it will not stop until removed...(this is where we all differ - some take yeras, others take months)

have anyone tried "FUGGIT' saw it at Midas over the week-end, worth a try??

I've seen more than one "homeless choobless" arrangement go through here on the FC, using Fugit or OKO or the other water-based sealants, without so much as a puncture. There are so many variables that it's hard to say which is "better". There are sealants I used to swear by (no names, no pack-drill) and I now swear about them. No doubt that was influenced by how far from home they failed on me....

How does liquid latex seal punctures anyhow?

Sorry if this is a little technical, but I've been thinking about what mechanism causes the liquid latex to coagulate when the sealant seals a puncture.

I don't think it has anything to do with ammonia evaporation. The ammonia can only evaporate once the sealant leaves the tire (too late) and even with ammonia removed I wouldn't expect spontaneous coagulation to occur.

I searched online and came across the term "shear-induced coagulation" relating to latex processing. Apparently latex coagulation can occur through improper (too violent) pumping and/or mixing of liquid latex. This reminded me of my first batch of OSS: I used a paint mixer with an electric drill running way too fast and
when I removed the mixer from the brew there was a latex booger on the mixing blades
. In the case of sealing punctures, when the sealant is forced into the puncture hole the strong fluid shearing that occurs is probably what's causing the spontaneous latex coagulation.

Wow!! never too old to, learn something new...

I ride with Stans in my Crossmarks on Crossmax wheels, replace the sealant biannually and its usually still fluid, sometimes a small creature has grown.

Any chance the rest of us can see this white knuckle clip Hayley?

They are trying to make fun of me like always. Some how I wish Admin can make Waytt and Vetseun stop comment on my posts. Really can't believe they have to do that to get a thrill from life, or "just to feel better". Enough boys, start acting your age now. Thanks.

it takes all types to make the world go round Hayley. Perhaps a bit of jealousy on their part? Would like to see videos of them riding rock gardens.

Cool. No worries. I chicken out of rock gardens sometimes too.

EDIT: really wasn't trying to make fun, hope you didn't take it the wrong way
