Tyre pressures for Enduro

Heya guys, time for another "for enduro" thread :whistling:

I used to just feel by hand when pumping my tyres, this wasn't always the most accurate way of measuring pressure. So, I got hold of a proper pump and a little digital pressure gauge but I still cant figure this out.

Reading around the internet, even here on the hub, guys are talking about 30-40psi. If I pump my front tyre to even 20psi, it feels rock hard. Way harder than I would expect... Thought maybe the enduro/am crowd might run a little lower than the XC crowd...

So, what pressure/tyre/rim combo are you on... Anyone in the 30 psi range up front, anyone below 20psi?

Very much tyre, rim and personal preference specific, but I've never gone harder than 25psi on any rim / tyre combo front or back.

30 / 40 psi will be a bit of a disaster for me.

silly thread title, but that was the plan it seems :P

But what Iwan Not The Crow Kemp said: its a highly subjective thing, and its not really the type of riding that dictates the pressure, but rather the amount of grip you want. Even the XC crowd requires as much grip as they can get, especially when ascending steep, very loose terrain.

I use a floor pump with its built-in gauge, but at the end of the day, I use my thumbs. I've gotten so used to pressing on the top cap of the tyre to know when hard enough is hard enough. But again, it depends on what tyre is being used as not all tyres offer the same level of grip for one's riding style. Kenda nevegals is one tyre in particular where IMO, the grip is very pressure sensitive. A good accurate pressure gauge would be very useful,

My sweet spot is approx 25 psi. Any less and the tire folds i....

Haha, yes, it was meant to be a silly thread title :P

Yeah, I totally get that it depends on so much, even riding style, terrain, weight etc etc...

Guess I was interested to see if anyone runs crazy low or high pressures... Like for me, Crow and Mayhem sound crazy, if I pump up to 25psi it feels like i have a 3.35 permatube :P

The fundamental concept is that less is more...but variables such as rim/bead design, your mass, tyre width/rim width relationship and actual tyre volume are simple tokenisms.

Wide rims are ostensibly better for running lower volumes, reducing the risk of bizarre sidewall deformation under high cornering loads, over severely broken terrain.

As a guide, I am 75kg, inflate my Minion DHF 2.35 up front to 20psi on a ZTR Flow rim. No issues.

I like pumping my holleyRollers 3bar, now in summer and most of my riding is hard-packed. Pap fat knobbly tyres will not be as fast in berms, but then again, if there is no berm for my holleyRollers, I hit the deck, lol

As said, all depends what you feel like

Im in the same boat as cpt armpies mayhem but probably worse :whistling:

I find my tyres sweet spot is 1,8bar up front 2 bar out back. Any less than that the front is like landing on jelly when dropping off and jumping and the rear will suffer from pinch flats...

I do weigh 112kgs and not the smoothes of riders

I run my front at between 23 - 25 psi and the rear 26 - 30 psi.

I find the hans dampf bites nicely at those pressures, the rear is a bit harder than I would like, but I'm sick of rim bashing and snake bites. Also it isnt a big issue if the rear slides around a bit,I will not mention what tyre Im running on the rear ATM, as it is one that should not be mentioned in enduro circles :P

Craig: grab your floor pump, and go hit some trails with nice fast, flat corners (always a good test of grip and side wall compliance). start with your normal pressure, and then decrease in suitable increments. Ride, test, change. rinse repeat.
