A little off topic but when I wanted a cheap rear wheel to use on my bike a few years back none of the bike shops wanted to sell me a rear wheel on its own. It could only be bought as a 'set' and everyone wanted to sell me fancy wheels (even though my M475 hub did well over 15,000km and I wanted the same again).

I wound up having to drive all the way out to Solomons in Pretoria North as they were happy to sell me one wheel on its own.

Comments understood, I raised this in my personal experience and opinion. If I misunderstood something at some point,my bad. The only thing I wanted,is the hub to be replaced,at a reasonable price and service. Just for a little bit of background,on a previous occasion I needed to buy a usb cable for a Giant neos pro bike comp, they phoned around, said they could get the item, and would phone me,but never phoned me. Glad everybody else received good service from them,I only received questionable service.

The Chinese hub you are referring to is probably a Novatech or Powerway hub...they are infact quite nice hubs.

I run the Novatec hubs on my ZTR Crest wheels and they roll smoother than alot of branded hubs. The sealed bearings is actually a positive thing.

I am not standing up for them, but your wheel would have ended up rolling smoother, have a better hub than you had and also it would have been lighter.

How much did they quote you for the wheel build ?

On the m475 hub, that is why I personally like it,and like to get it again on my training rim.

Now here is a quote that I can accept,Shimano Xt rear hub, centrelock R700,for the disc,R160. When I asked for the labour and wheelbuild,I was told "unless you can do it,lol,we will gladly do it for you, seeing that you will need to buy the components from us". All components are new,and service was great. Rant for shop A,rave for shop B

I have been using Metro for the last ~4 years and i consider them my local bike shop. Thats not to say i buy everything there, there are times when CRC is just a no brainer. Nowhere is perfect but these guys are better than most. On the few items i have shopped around for they have been cheaper than the Jhb bike shops i compared them with - components wise not so much but certainly on the bike services side.

Their plusses (and the reason i keep going back)

  • Service quality (in terms of done right the first time) has been significantly better than I experienced elsewhere - i have had 1 minor gripe after I guess 12 services on 2 bikes. The guys you talk to are the guys working on the bikes.
  • They have on 4 occasions fixed items for free, then and there in order to get the bike where i needed it before heading away for a weekend. Once taking around 20 mins of work on the bike to get it right.

The minusses

  • booking a full service at least 2 weeks ahead
  • they dont always have stock of what you want

Shop B is Saley's cycles in vereeniging, happy with the service I receive. As I said, maybe I go there on a bad time/did not get that good/wow experience, but up to now,not happy with vaal metro. So rant over, got what I wanted, smiling again to ride another day (next week, lol). Thanx for everybody's input, always trying to keep a argument healthy, and positive. Eveybody enjoy the long weekend, for those travelling,be safe on the roads, and for the riders racing, keep the rubber on the gravel/tar,and have fun.

That does not sound right.

New Xt hub incl wheel build R700, Xt rotor R160?

Wheel build is not an easy job especially if that means stripping the old wheel...

Believe it,it is true. I will post pics as soon as its done, along with the invoice. Clarification on the rotor,it is not a Xt rotor as far as I understand, but a shimano centrelock rotor.(will confirm model)
