Surprisingly quickly, I started with a step ladder, the worst is willing yourself to transfer your other hand to the handlebars! But do it enough and you won't look back. Haven't fallen yet, touch wood. Don't lean on the handlebars as a start, keep your weight "back", over the bottom bracket and keep your core strong / tensed.

also check that your tire pressure is high enough and the roller length set so that the front wheel is centred above the front barrel. Iit also helps to not have dogs under your pedals or kids hanging on your handlebars or earthing you when you least expect it  )

Earthing? Eish... don't try electrical repairs on the house while riding rollers.

Took me about 5 minutes using a counter top about 20 years ago. The above advice is all good.

The Tacx rollers are probably the lightest, smoothest and quietest rollers around, but they offer little resistance without adding the resistance unit, so are intended for warming up prior to racing rather than as a training roller. If you are going to use an MTB (especially without slicks) I would look at a smaller diameter aluminium roller like those from Jet Black, it more robust and has more resistance, but it is heavy so not the sort of roller you want to airfreight to events !

have just heard a cracker in Minnaars shop now ....

Sitting at the counter chatting to the boys and a customer walks in new tube and tyre in hand with his wheel

Customer - "So it seems that size marked on the tube is different to teh size of the wheel"

Josh - "Sorry sir, but you need to put the tyre onto the wheel before inflating the tube and trying to put the tube onto the wheel - the tube will stretch so will easily be bigger than the wheel"

Customer - "OH - how do you do that?"

... I was sitting on the side like ... "WOW" ... thats a Noobie

Bought a Tacx rollers and it arrived today. Damn, it hard to ride on it, like learning to ride a bike for the first time again as a child. How long did you guys take before you could ride without holding onto something??

Took me one and a half day before i could stay on them for more than 15 min.You will get it sooner than you think ,then you never struggle again .Brilliant for core muscle strength and balance .My balance improved with only half an hour on them.I found them really good adjunct training for mtb .30min at high cadence is a proper workout Edited by Blitzer

I also bough the Galaxia rollers from CWC when they had their previous sale.

First time I tried next to the couch - I could not get my hand off the couch. Tried 30 min and thought it is impossible.

Next time I set up next to a pillar so that my right elbow can touch the pillar for support (with my hand on the handlebars). Took me 2 minutes to get rolling!

Still have to concentrate though - I cannot even take one hand off the handlebars yet.
