There's a bikepark in JHB?

please note this advice was free but only for older than 18

younger than 18 still got the guts and time to heal after a crash

I reckon a bmx track would be the best place to try, the jumps are tamer but some (Kempton, Alrode) have pro lines with bigger doubles. They still aren't as gnarly as the DH jumps.

Also, theres the bag jump at aforementioned bike park - every wed night.

Take your DH bike and hit the kicker, land on the bag.

I've hit dirt jumps, bmx tracks and 4th gear table tops on my MX bike, but those DH jumps scare the crap out of me

Hitting any jump on any bike should be a progression. Start small & work your way up. Trying to take short cuts or pushing too hard will put you in hospital.

My personal rule is, if I can't visualize or see myself making the jump then I don't try.

For me learning to dirt jump (at the Scout Hall) was probably the biggest DH advantage I've had. The jumps are small enough that the consequence of failure (and there will be failures) is not too drastic (although the place has broken people) and the lips are quite mellow for dirt jumps, but still have a decent transition. That 'base' for me has been excellent for moving my riding forward.

Once you have confidence with your jumping and you start trying new progressive bigger/faster jumps it helps a lot to have someone who knows the jump to tow you in. Helps ease your mind of one more variable you'll be facing when hitting the jump for the first time.

The more you ride and hit jumps/drops etc. the better your 'feel' for speed into a new jump/drop will be.

  1. Don't take riding advice from an internet forum. Especially this one. Especially from me.
  2. Try do one of Potties camps
  3. Refer to rule 1
  4. Put a hit list of jumps that you want to hit together from small to big.
  5. Deff refer to rule 1
  6. Build up slowly. The guys hitting the big stuff didn't just wake up one day and send it.
  7. You are gonna crash. But you'll also soon realize you aren't made of glass
  8. Rule 1!
  9. Get your old man to sponsor you a trip to France. (Sorry I had to add that in there)
