When my wife was still cycling I put here through a short mechanical course. Every evening when she watched tv she had to take out a wheel from the bike take out the tube and put it back. Later she did it in under 5 minutes. When she got a flat on the road she was able to fix it herself. When she was out training I knew she was ok.

However, I have some rules, the first one being if you are male or female and you haven't got spares you're going to get a roasting, this is unforgivable in our sport.

yes but .. I normally ride with a Plan A, B and C but the day I left my saddle bag at home is the day I get a snake bite.

Eish would not have started thread if i knew it was going to be dragged out. She did not complain about not been helped , when I asked her about the ride and she told me about it it was i who was surprised no one assisted (after initially telling her how friendly and helpful cyclists are, my bad)

She had all the right tool's and spares so no need to have been out of pocket, this post was about offering to help, not a free handout. But typical HUB it gets turned into mush.

Yeah I've nominated you for Troll of the day award

The prize is a new bmx toob with color pichas showing how to do a toobless conversion

My good lady and I ride Atlas road occasionally. I stop for someone with problems generally. If I can see that someone is working on the bike and there is more than one person there, I'll ask if all is ok. Usually all is fine and I carry on riding. I myself learnt the hard way out there when I forgot to check what was in the saddle bag. Of course that was the day I picked up a puncture..... had a 5km walk back to the car. Several people stopped to assist nonetheless and no one had tyre levers with them. Lesson learnt, always check that the essentials are on the bike.

IMHO, in today's spirit of equality, the fact that it was a woman should make no difference. If she can't change her own tyres, then tough takkie.

Having said that, it makes no difference, if I see someone in trouble and I can help, then I will.

I get everyone's point of view on this, but I have a few cents to add...

I think she was unprepared and unpracticed. She should rely on her own skills and not a passing cyclist. What if none were around?

I have recently helped a mate start cycling, a fun and exciting exercise. But he didn't like it when we came home from the bike shop with all the cool goodies, and I made him take off both wheels, deflate tyres, remove, and reinstall tubes. One with a pump, one with a bomb. He got the hang of it. On our training ride last week, he punctured and fixed it all by himself! My point is, if she had practiced, she would have known she had an issue with getting the tyre off(a very common problem, especially with those gatorskins!), and would have either practiced till she could, or known she needed to replace them with something easier to work with.

Would you let your daughter drive a car without teaching her to change a wheel?

Come on. It takes some sense.

I have helped so many people stranded, from those who couldn't do the simplest of fixes, to a guy with a bike costing easily over 100k but had a crappy inflator that didn't work. You should at least ask if someone needs help, before rushing past, but also, you shouldn't need help for a minor repair task.
