Hubbers, I need some advise. Been running XT BR-M785 disc brakes. After a hectic ride yesterday front brake failed. After close inspection saw that mineral oil is leaking from the ceramic pistons on the side. So yes, new bleed, pads, etc.

Now, can you service a caliper (new seals, etc.)? Or is it the end of the road for the caliper?

Get yourself some Avids - they would not do that.

Yes you can service calipers (good ones)

Google is your friend

All Avid brakes should be sold with these...

How old are the brakes?

Before bin, see what the agent says.

Might be a repair/replace policy, no matter the age.

1yr warranty, only applicable to original purchaser with invoice.

There will always be somebody selling calipers etc. This as a result of brake levers etc. Getting written off by crashes and the like....i for example have 2 perfect working Avids where insurance paid for replacements after a hectic crash...

TX for all the comments. I'll buy a new caliper, and try to "refurbish" the old/broken one for a spare.

I see you can get the caliper alone for about R700.

I think the caliper is supplied with a set of pads, so you "score" R150-R200.

The local agents don't sell rebuild kits, so if the seals are gone you're either going to have to source a kit from fleabay or get a new caliper. As Cassie says, put a wanted ad in the classifieds and you should come right in a matter of minutes.
