Yup yup one and the same. He and Freddie go back to the early 90's,  caused shenanigans of note lol. I reckon they're the wild cards to watch out for .... they have an interesting take on strategy :)

Jason English just won his 5th consecutive 24hr Solo World Championship title in Scotland, riding 26 laps of 13.4km for 348kms with 11934m of climbing.

A bit of a shot across the bow to the other competitors...

So you going to show him how it's done in Africa?

He's already given me a lesson in 24hr racing ;) (while being quite polite and chatty)

Just in case there are any last minute drop outs - I'm getting myself into shape...

Hey All, new to the site. I had a lot of interest in the race. The website only listed about 4 or 5 teams registered, though they were top contenders. Do you think many other teams actually registered? I heard they were limiting entries to 450 teams so it sounded like they were being inundated. But I wonder if the opposite is more likely?

Welcome.

Yes it does seem that way, especially if you look at that entry fee and the exchange rate into our local currency, the South African Rand (its currently around US$1 to R11) so the US$10,000 would work out to R110,000 for us locals which is more than double a Cape Epic entry.

Welcome to the hub. Have a read through here where they are busy discussing it.

Does that double up as an everesting record?

Apparently not. You have to go up and down the same hill, not laps. Otherwise 37 laps at Oak Valley would get you there. (3 laps more than the current record)

Ahh ok thank you for that. Would've thought any climbing is fine, but that's what it is.

Do you have any everesting plans? Or done already?! Haven't seen a blog post.

The Munga, a 1000km, single-stage mountain bike race, has been given confirmation from Cycling South Africa that it has sanctioned the period of 2 – 7 December, over the next 5 years, specifically for this mountain bike (MTB) race.

This race period will not change and will continue through the Karoo semi dessert in the South African summer time.  “This race time is not only suitable to local riders but to those in the northern hemisphere and we are pleased that Cycling South Africa has confirmed the dates,” says Alex Harris, founder of Xplore Authentic Experiences and Race Director of The Munga.

“Even with the postponement of the race in 2014, we continue to undertake the necessary plans and arrangements for 2015,” adds Harris.

ok slight correction - frontpage of website - has updated to show that it is sort of on. the Faq is outdated and refers to last year's cancelled race, i only checked this now since Alex is kind of in the news doing Tourdivide. so don't expect any answers in the next 10 days.

https://themunga.com/the-race- solo unsupported talks of R50k prizemoney for winner in mens,womens/development cats. no talk of entry fee

https://themunga.com/faqstill $10k entry, but refers to canned 2014 race, hence my confusion.
