River Rat Posted May 30, 2014 Author Posted May 30, 2014 sometime around 1987, Durbs, not canoeing, but swimming!! Hardly fits over 1 leg now.I did one of those the canoe leg was on the Blue Lagoon and the ride to Stanger was hell on the way back thanks to the wind!

Ohlsson was the sponsor when I did it and the first Iron Man, I think 1984, was sponsored by the Rand Daily Mail two brands no longer with us. Another interesting point was the Iron Man was effectively dealt a death blow when Chesney Thomas took over the organising and moved it to Sun City. The deal was that you would only be given your finishers medal at a breakfast event the morning after. They were trying to force the athletes to stay over at Sun City and two years later the event was gone from the calendar.

Pics would prove nothing but the Lochness monster No shame in that, I remember helping the great Graeme Pope-Ellis back into his boat after he took a swim at the yacht club. Needless to say he still whipped my ass by a quarter of an hour on the paddle.
TALUS Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Small Hijack. I remember the Pretoria Ohlssson"s Marathon - at 32km they had a "watertable" with beer. We were bulletproof at the time. Beer at 32km! Still finished sub 4 but lekker dronk. Eish those days. nonky 1
