Route Summary

The race is always mountainous but this year’s edition is tilted even more to the climbers and stage race specialists. The mid-race long time trial, often a tradition, has been dropped with only the 10km opening stage against the clock.

After the opening stage in Lyon the race heads immediately for its first summit finish on Monday with the Col du Béal, a long climb but not fierce. There are two days for the sprinters and two for puncheurs but the final weekend sees the Queen Stage with the finish on Stage 7 in Switzerland by the Emosson dam at the end of a tough steep climb and if the weather’s good it promises to be spectacular on TV.

Sunday’s final stage is mountainous and could be decisive, especially as every stage has a time bonuses of 10-6-4 seconds for the first three.

This year’s route eschews a long time trial, opting for an opening-day 10-kilometer race against the clock instead, and delivers a mix of challenging, perhaps explosive transition stages full of traps. It should make for some interesting, if not nerve-racking racing, especially for anyone gunning for the GC.

Looking forward to this one - traditionally the key build-up race to the TDF (the winner usually wins the Tour).

Looking forward to seeing some proper battles between this lot (just use your imagination and put a taller and younger BMC rider into the pic on the left...).

To spice up things, the race organizers have decided to bring back the bonus seconds. This means there are now 10, 6 & 4 seconds on the finishing line each day – except for the opening time trial. Stage 1 is the only ITT in the race and its 10.4 km won’t make big gaps amongst the favourites. This year, the race will be settled on the climbs – and there are plenty of them!
