schwalbe racing ralphs - weight

Recommended Posts

So,

my ole man is currently building up a marathon bike for World champs and to defend his XC title in Norway later this year.

in the process we weighed everything that went on his bike using a medical grade scale.

to our surprise the 4 brand new racing ralphs were significantly different in weight from one another

i'm talking a spread of just under 100 grams.

so from 580 grams to 678 grams

its got us wandering how there can be around 15% difference?

poor quality control maybe? who knows.

it doesn't bother us really, but it is a lot more than we ever expected

Anyone else done this exercise?

Not questioning your intelligence, but were they not perhaps a mix of TRL non snakeskins and Snakeskin versions, that difference just sounds huge

Lol,

no they were absolutely identical in every way

thats why i am questioning it, the differences in weight really has us quite confused

he is referring to two different models of tyre, whereas you found the same variance within the same model of tyre. That's very poor quality control.

Are they:

  • the same compound (pacestar etc) tyres?
  • wire or folding bead?
  • same color or white/other colors?
  • all evolution line?
  • all snakeskin?
  • same wheel size?

If yes in that regard as well, query Schwalbe. keen to hear what they see as acceptable manufacturing tolerances on weight.

This is starting to turn into Mine is............... :whistling:

It is strange especially if you watch their video on how they make the tires and how they brag at quality control.

You should know as a Scotsman I went for the lowest..... I think one I had was 580 something but that could be the one that got a puncture on the 2nd ride......... :whistling:

I have a new one in the box at home will weigh it tonight and give feedback. The last scale I had was a little dodgy
