As a multi-sport enthusiast here is my take :

 

As far as road running and cycling goes cyclists should be moving on the same side of the road and in the same direction as the cars and runners should be going in the opposite direction so everyone SHOULD see each other. If this is not the case you are on the wrong side of the road !!!!

 

All MTB's should have a bell this is just common sense. Any runner with STUFF in their ears is just looking to get it sooner or later.

 

Agree with seeker. A runner's reaction time to on coming traffic is much greater than when cycling in oncoming traffic. The only thing you accomplish when cycling in the wrong direction is you can look the motorist in the eye when he hits you

I have the perfect solution for your problem.

You don't even have to take your hands of the bars to make runners hear you coming from behind.

I like these two because they're light and not so intrusive... they just give a single ping which is enough to alert most... and not annoy "sensitive" people. I got mine from Linden Cycles... under R50

lol I've got an Airzound but I don't use it - it's overkill for peds and largely ignored by motorists so I just use the bell for peds.
