How cool is this!? I am on a billboard at Cape Town International! If you go to the drop off area you can see me! I am in the leading rider in the shot.

Cool!  Par the drop bars and sunnies - that billboard could almost have been photoshopped from your profile pic...

Hi Guys, can you help with some newbie questions?

Would you recommend a Camelbak for a 'middle of the pack' rider?

What are the waterpoints stocked with?

Any practical logistics advice for supper/showers/etc?

Thanks alot. As you can tell my first one and super excited!

I have not done the W2W yet, but know the area well. I would not waste money on a Camelback if I were you.

What have you been training with? Was that enough? if so carry on.

I remember for my first Epic I purchased one and used it for 2 days then never again. I think the added weight and heat generated does not justify the expense.

That said make sure you get proper MTB bottles or at least bottles that will not jump out of their cadges. This is most important, if you can't get that right a Camelback is probably your answer.

So they make mtb specific bottles these days do they?

Thanks, have done a few longer MTB races and also found the Camelbak very heavy to carry. So me thinks the 2 bottle option is the way to go

I used to ride Camelbak all the time, but now find 2 bottles does the trick.  If you have space, go for 1 x 750ml and one regular side 500ml one.

Day 1 got VERY hot last year, but not even a camelbak could save me from popping.  The water points are stocked to the max ala Sani / Bergnbush.  Just eat and drink early and often and you'll be fine.

Watch that HR and survive till you summit the friggen walking of St. Lowry's pass.  From there, lovely single track and district road to the end of day 1!

Some camping tips:

If it's raining - bring a pair of rubber boots.

Washing pegs to hang your stuff out to dry are always handy. Maybe some rope to use as a washing line between tents.

A plastic bag or two to get stuff from the tent to the shower and back.

I also prefer saddlebag and two water bottles instead of Camelbak.

I can only carry one bottle.

Last year I broke two seatpost bottle carriers on W2W : full bottle + rough terrain = trouble. I promise you the middle of the pack guys will need more than 1 bottle between WP2 and 3 (portage section). The portage takes 30min - 45min to cover less than 2 k's.

I hate it but this year I will carry a camelback (especially since I hope it wont be pissing for the whole 5h again).

I'm also a 1 bottle dude...there are plenty water points where you can refill. I take 3 sets of kit so don't need to do washing. Take a decent sleeping bag, and track suit pants. You are getting a jacket.. Showers are awesome, in a cubicle. Food is awesome. Chill zone is awesome. iPad optional. Don't need much else. The walk up the cart track is not that bad.
